DWTS Renewed ....

Tyra does like the show.  She has to act like she is interested in what she is doing.  You don't want an apathetic host.  I think a big problem is there is no live audience.  This shows needs it.  It does kind of make it more dull.

Well, I just reviewed the posts and you folks make some good points.  I stopped liking the Tyra drama years ago and I'm glad they seem to have her on a short leash.  Still, the 'how do you feel' questions are pathetic.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the potential of all the contestants this season.  Except for the guy who got sent home, nobody sucked.  Justina was a surprise.  Lots of grace and fluidity.  I don't know her show but I'm sure I've seen her before.  Oh, wait.  I remember.  She was on Queen of the South, right?

Still trying to wade through the new pros.  I miss the old dancers.

Ratings always fall off from the first week, don't they?

She is named as a producer of the show, so maybe she can claim a bit of ownership?

She appears to be following everyone's social media looking for interview questions, so it looks like she is doing more than reading cue cards...

I should note here that I have never watched any of her shows before nor read any gossip drama mags about her.  I have just seen pictures of her, so she is starting out with me with a no history clean slate.  

I miss Tom, though.

On another note, I felt bad for Derek at the end, needing to cast his vote to eliminate Charles.  Emma and Sasha are very close couple friends with him and Haley.  No one enjoys cutting the income of a friend!  They are going to tease guilt trip him for weeks over that...

I know you didn't bring this up, but I don't follow ratings.  If I like a show, I watch it.  If it's canceled I can't do anything about it.  The world won't end.  I doubt Emma and Sasha are hurting for money.  They probably make it in other ways.

I hope they are not hurting for money, but they are still going to guilt trip Derek just to yank his chain and tease him.  Sasha enjoys teasing his friends. I think Derek enjoys it, too.

But speaking of income,  I do wonder how the pros made up for loss of income when DWTS dropped the Spring season and then Covid blocked in-person events.  I know Sharna created a YouTube show with her sister while in quarantine, so that brought in some income, but I don't know about the rest.  Living in LA is not cheap.

If she just rephrased those "How do you feel' questions to something like "What's that like for you?" it wouldn't make me cringe as badly...

And we are now in week 3. Disney night. 

Costuming was terrific and I really appreciated the music choices.  That theme song waltz from UP always makes me tear up.  Everyone got into character mode well. 

But again, no dancer really wowed me. There was some improvement with those who are new to dancing, but the already graceful ones did the expected. 

I was surprised at all the gushing the judges did about Johnny Weir.  I thought his bum was sticking out, and I was not impressed.  Did I imagine that?  I will have to watch it again. 

The big cat lady got eliminated but she seemed relieved to be going home.  

On a positive note, Keo looked great in his Hercules costume!

Just stopping by to see what's going on with The Tyra Banks Show.

Maks has done a Youtube series of comments about the first week’s dances.  I have not seen anything for the second week, but Lindsay has announced that she is going to do a commentary as well.  They should do these things together (remotely).  Conversations are more fun than monologues, don’t you think?

In any case, Maks commented on one of the limitations that the dancers have this season in terms of extra help from same sex pros that they used to get but now cannot due to the need for isolation. For example, if Maks was in need of someone to help model the more feminine flourishes for his partner, he would ask Peta to help him out, and that assistance greatly enhanced his partner’s performance. And if a female pro needed to help her partner look more manly while still being graceful, she would ask a male pro to come in and help. And apparently they all helped each other freely like this, but cannot do so anymore.

I'm not crazy about Disney week either and I'm just glad they got it over with.  I think next week is emotional week which I don't care for, where they bring up some sad time in their life.  I guess there won't be troupe dancers.

I love Disney week because I love Disney music.  Seriously, I have about 100 Disney songs on my iPod that I listen to regularly when I am doing things like clearing snow from my driveway.   The variety of styles - all upbeat - keeps me motivated. 

 I do NOT like tearjerker week at all.   In fact, I almost resent that they manipulate our emotions every season with that. 

Oh, and I hate showmances, too.  I think we will be spared that this season.

I put the peppy music on too when I have work to do  ....  

I went back and did a little research on that.  I made a list of all the songs assigned on Disney night back to season 18.  This did not include any pro numbers, since I couldn't find a list of them.  And there are a bunch of times when Disney songs were danced to on non-Disney nights (like Mark and Sadie danced to the song from "Up" on "Movie night"). And the pros have done "Be My Guest" a few times.

There are 90 lines on my database sheet, and I don't know how to post them.

In any case, what I found was that there were a few songs that were brand new to the show this season- like "Prince Ali" from "Aladdin", the one from "Princess and the Frog", the one from "Newsies" and the new one from "Soul". 

The "Up" song was never danced on a Disney night before.   The other songs had been danced to before but only one - "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" was danced last year.  Most had not been assigned for several seasons, even though they seemed so memorable - like "Supercalifragilisticexpialodocious" -- can you believe it was last danced NINE seasons ago?  

Time sure flies by when you are old like me.

Trivial Question for everybody -- what is the first Disney Movie you remember seeing in an actual movie theatre?  For me, "Sleeping Beauty" comes to mind.  Maleficient scared the bejeezus out of me -- she loomed really large on the movie theatre screen!

But there were a number of earlier movies like Cinderella, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland that came out before I was born and yet I swear I saw them on the big screen.  Did Disney re-release movies at later times for the movie theatres in the 50's and 60's?

Disney movies were never just made for kids. They have always included bits that adults would love as well. Angela Lansbury once said that Disney movies were full out Broadway-class musical productions without the live action. And the animated ones are technical marvels. They require something like 24 drawings per SECOND of film.  You have great taste!

Nice to see you too! I really wish they hadn't messed things up so much by hiring her. DWTS is one of the things I really look forward to in the Fall.

Folks who do not want to add to DWTS ratings can:

1.  Go over to Puredwts and read the minute by minute commentary of the night.  It comes with a hefty dose of snark ( She calls Tyra “Tyrant”)  but you can at least see the scores and the reasons the judges gave for those scores.

2.  Watch the dances when they are uploaded 20 minutes after they are danced by a variety of Non-DWTS people who do this.  

When I miss a show, I watch a video and then read the part of the puredwts blurb that goes with it as the videos tend to leave the judges’s bit out. 

3.  Find Maks’ (Dance & Co) and Lindsay’s youtube channels as they also show the dances when they comment. 
But they take a week or more to post these.
