General Chit Chat Season 23
I was going to start this thread later but I think we need it already. Let's remember: everyone's opinion is valid. We don't all see things identically and are free to express our opinions on this board.

Re: General Chit Chat Season 23
From Broadway.com:
Dancing with the Stars' Mark Ballas will be the final actor to take on the iconic role of Frankie Valli and is set to make his Broadway debut in the show on October 18; he will remain with the production until the end of its run. Mauricio Pérez will continue to play the role at certain performances during the week, while Dominic Scaglione Jr. is scheduled to appear as Frankie for the final time on October 16.
So the good news is that he landed the lead role. The bad new, I guess, is that his contract for Broadway has just been reduced from one year to 4 months. But it's a start and he could take on the same role in other venues if they needed him.

No, it isn't like that at all. It's a fluff piece to capitalize on the old pros coming back and the kind of rivalries the audience expects as a result. It is kind of a retrospective of the past and what fans can expect in the future. The bit I read was about "Is the show fixed for Derek to win"? In response, Maks says that since the management changed, he hasn't had any issues with thinking that Derek gets favored, Cheryl says that Derek wins because he's good and that people complained that she was getting favored when she won the MBT two times in a row, too, and Derek says that he has had a lot of luck with the partners he has been assigned but producers have also tried to give him some (less good) partners specifically to counter the idea that he was favored and then he wound up winning with them. He has stopped caring about what people think anymore about that as it is outside his control.
That kind of thing....

Just found out that ABC in a totally boneheaded move will no longer allow any international fans to vote via Facebook. With a Canadian, James Hinchcliffe, competing that is simply asinine and I am darn mad. Especially since they allowed Australians to vote on Bindi's season.

Isn't there a place you can voice your complaint to ABC?Lesallee wrote:Just found out that ABC in a totally boneheaded move will no longer allow any international fans to vote via Facebook. Theoretically you can contact them and list your grievances but ABC is notorious for completely ignoring complaints.SLA44 wrote:Isn't there a place you can voice your complaint to ABC?Lesallee wrote:Just found out that ABC in a totally boneheaded move will no longer allow any international fans to vote via Facebook. Re: General Chit Chat Season 23
I think the Australians used (paid) proxy accounts to get around the ABC site voting restrictions; through a proxy server, they looked like they were in the US. Then they used Skype for the phone votes. Don't know about Facebook.
But I don't think ABC does this for any reason other than legal. As long as DWTS is considered a "contest", I'm fairly sure that they HAVE to say that it is open to US residents and territories only, and at least make a fairly good attempt to keep others out -- and by "fairly good", I mean something that would hold up in court if the show was sued by other countries for violating their "contest" laws. You see, every country restricts these things differently, and it would be very easy to violate international laws by (easily) allowing international voting.
GGJ can explain it better.
But why now? I am guessing that they closed what they saw as a "too easy" Facebook means of international voting because someone gave them a warning. OR, maybe Facebook just developed the means of restricting international voting and they now have to utilize that in order to appear diligent.
I was wondering about the "over 18" restriction, though. It seems like they try hard every season to get the younger viewers interested in the show through recruiting young stars. Wouldn't blocking the under 18's from voting work against their own interests? Blocking "under 14's" would make more sense to me.

Re: General Chit Chat Season 23
Yes psyche you are mostly correct. DWTS is a contest (as opposed to a lottery) and limiting voting to US residents and people over the age of 18 just makes compliance with every applicable law and regulation manageable. International compliance is extremely difficult and costly. So you would want to limit participation so that only US state and federal laws/regs applied.
Its the same thing with age. There are all sorts of different state rules that apply to minors taking part in contests and you are better off limiting participation to those over the age of 18. Simple as that.
But I recall answering this same question on the old board. The answer has not changed. There are no big conspiracies. Although that will not stop folks from claiming that there are.

What really makes me fume is ABC being quite happy to peddle their shows to Canadian networks but then classifying us as "non persons". Damn it, if I'm watching DWTS on a Canadian network I should be able to vote, not only on FB but also on the ABC site. They should be able to work out the so called legalities to fix this.

You are clearly right. You know the REAL powers that be -- you know those shadowy people who run the whole world -- actually wanted to make ALL applicable law (broadcast, contest, everything even remotely applicable) uniform not only across the states but internationally. Just for the convenience of those DWTS fans. That would have been really easy to do. No problem whatever. But the suits at ABC, or whoever runs DWTS these days, turned out to be more powerful, and stopped this movement because they want to manipulate the DWTS votes and make their viewers angry. Go figure.kincaid53 wrote:

What's really takes the cake, is their legal team probably could. (Crikey, I'll probably get feedback on that comment )
Let's blame it on the Biebs

One small example of what they would be up against in Canada is that of trying to include Quebec. The rules for Quebec contests say that everything pertaining to the contest has to be communicated in French as well as English. So, that would mean that everything on the DWTS website would have to be subtitled in French; anything written in English would have to also be written in French; the phone call answer would have to be voiced in French (doubling the time for each phone call)... needless to say, it would be a problem.
Opening it up to France would be worse... in France, the show would have to compensate all money paid for voting -- phone charges, internet charges, roaming charges, etc. A nightmare.
Strictly, in spite of being in the EU, where one might hope that there might be some universal law that would cover that swath of countries, nevertheless limits its votes to the UK, presumably to avoid problems like that one in the paragraph above.
I don't think it is so easy to work out these "so-called legalities".

Re: General Chit Chat Season 23
Ah, but, Psychee, I voted for years on the ABC site and on FB right up to and including last season. As did thousands of other Canadians. Suddenly now it's a no go zone. Why did these legalities just become crucial now? Pretty strange and I am still cheesed off.
