2016 Summer Olympics
Did you all see the Track & Field trials last night? SLA: There's this University of Oregon runner who's insanely awesome - Galen Rupp. He's already qualified for the Marathon, and last night he kicked everybody's butt in the 10K - he practically lapped 1/3 of the field. On Monday he will try to qualify for the 5K. Think about it; from 26.2 miles to 6.2 miles to 3.1 miles
They said his training program consists of running 145 miles per week @?@#? Holy Crap; if he just medals in all three events that will be an amazing accomplishment, but if he wins gold in all three, it would be unbelievable - probably one of the greatest achievement in track history.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
I know this is about the Tour de France, but cycling is an Olympic sport and we will see some of the people in this years Tour at the Olympics. Stage one Saturday ended at Utah beach the site of the D-Day invasion some 72 years ago. Anybody who follows the Tour yearly knows the photography is spectactcular as is the countryside they film. Just the history of some these old buildings just blows your mind. For example yesterday they passed this large abbey that was built in 1064 as well as the Church that hung up some of the paratroopers on their spires. They did show the church in the movie The Longest Day and there are people living around the town when the Yanks invaded and remember it.Anyway if you want to watch a great travelogue and some sports mixed in, tune in the Tour. It's carried by NBCsn beginning 5:30 am CT and will be on for almost 3 more weeks.

What's up Dude; yeah I was watching a little of the Tour and the historic sites. That's really cool they ended at Utah Beach. They had a summary of the first leg, with some of the historic pictures you mentioned:

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
My Hometown Houston Gymnast, Simone Biles won her 4th consecutive national championship; first time ever done in 42-years.....Don't anybody tell GymJanie; her head will explode:)
ST. LOUIS -- Simone Biles’ cruised through the U.S. championships this weekend on her express ticket to Rio de Janeiro.
The three-time defending U.S. all-around gymnastics champion easily won a fourth on Sunday. Her score of 125 points outpaced second-place Aly Raisman by 3.9 points. Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian rounded out the top five.

Sweetheart Allyson Felix is going to her 3rd Olympics, but her first 400m - she won the US trials. I'd love to pass my baton to her:

Big drama of the day was "Running Mom', Alysia Montano, who was favored to win the 800m, tripped and fell while leading the pack and didn't qualify for the Olympics. What a heartbreaker - to wait 4 years and then trips.

Mu head has been exploding over Simone since 2013 Monkey bars. She won her 3d worlds championships last fall . She is simply on a completely different level than even the most talented elite girls.Feces.Hurling.Monkey wrote:My Hometown Houston Gymnast, Simone Biles won her 4th consecutive national championship; first time ever done in 42-years.....Don't anybody tell GymJanie; her head will explode:)
On floor she leaves everyone gasping no matter how many times they have seen her basically saunter into tumbling passes that on are difficult as the ones the guys do. Her 4th pass (elite gymnasts do 4 passes v.s. college gymnasts who do 3) is more difficult than most girl's first pass. Its just astonishing.
Unless she melts down she will take home 5 medals -- team, AA, floor, beam and vault. And 3 of them are almost certain gold -- team, AA and floor. Vault is now likely gold (since she upgraded her 2d valut to a cheng) and beam is a possible gold but could be silver or even bronze.
As Aly Raisman (2012 Olympic floor -- and team -- champion -- headed to Rio for her 2d Olympics) says 'there's Simone and then there are the rest of us."

Hi FHM maybe mr.Rupp will finally make a dent into the Kenyans domination of the distance events.I haven't been following track and field for a while,so I never heard of him before. I sure hope Bolt is ready for Rio because with Gatlin in there we could see a world record time. There was a thrilling finish yesterday in the Tour that eneded in a photo finish.Stage 4 today just ended in another photo finish.Montano is pee odd because she lost out to 2 Russians in a previous Olympic who have been stripped of their medals because of doping. All that prep work done for nothing.Jane who are the countries that have any chance against our gymnastic team?I know Canada has a gal I saw in the Pan Am games that's pretty good. Any event that Simone is in is pretty much a lock for her.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Tango, there is no WAG team that presents a serious challenge to USA. Especially since the Russians lost Viktoria komova (she is not competing in the Olympics due to back pain) and the Romanians did not qualify a team. (larissa Iordache is arguably the 2d or 3d best AAer in the world). The only question is who takes 2d and 3d place on TF -- Russia?? China?? and who takes 3d on AA (the two Americans who qualify for AA are likely to take gold and silver although frankly, i can see Musty or Shang getting silver. It depends on qwho our 2d AAer is
On EFs there are some serious challenges of course. We are weak on UBs. (Simone will not make EFs on bars)
The serious challenges from other teams are: Aliya Mustafina (Russia); Ellie Black (Canada); Angelina melnikova (Russia); Shang Chunsong is a serious AAer (China) ; Larissa Iordache (Romania); Rebecca Andrade (Brazil); Guilia Steingurber (Swiss)
And then there is Oksana Chusovita. Competing from Uzbekistan this year. Girl is over 40. She is going to EFs on vault for sure and may medal. She's got a Produniova and she could medal. Chuso is a goddess. 7 consecutive Olympics

Simone was honored this weekend with the ceremonial 'first pitch' of the Houston vs Seattle game. She took the ball out the pitcher's mound, then did a Cartwheel, no hands touching the ground, then threw a (slightly off) pitch to the catcher. Standing O from the crowd !! She then said in the interview she's leaving today for San Jose (??) to the Gym trials. ....
She's a real sweetheart when interviewed - you were right, totally grateful and grounded; I"m cheering for her!!
I guess you misspoke when you said Aly is "headed for her 2nd" Oly, since she hasn't made the team yet....but I'll take your *Expert* opinion ( ) that she will - all the other experts think she'll make it too.....

Hey DudeGuy! I'd be very surprised if Rupp can break the Kenyan's dominance on Marathon gold, but wouldn't it be awesome if he did. This will be his first Olympic marathon event, so I doubt he has the experience. But he should kick butt in the 10K.
I saw the Stage 4 was another 'photo finish'. I didn't realize they are back to awarding 'bonus time' this year. I did find this Tour '16 chart that had a bunch of cool info I'd thought you find interesting; especially all the historic sites for the upcoming stage finishes:

Did you see the entire Russian Track & Field Team is banned for Doping - DOOH!
The IAAF, track’s world governing body, suspended Russia in November after a World Anti-Doping Agency report detailed widespread, state-sponsored doping in Russian track and field. The ban was upheld by the IAAF in a vote last month.
The IAAF ban already allows a small number of Russians to compete at the Rio Olympics if they can show they have been based outside the country and subject to testing from a respected, non-Russian anti-doping agency.

But seriously, Simone is a 100% lock. Aly at this point (after her performance at nationals) is a 98.5% lock. Gabby is a 96% lock. Laurie Hernandez is a 98.5% lock. The only real question is who the 5th person will be and the smart money is on madison Kocian.

It's understandable how embarrassing this must be for you, being the gymnastics expert and all that, but not knowing that the Women's Oly trials start this Friday and then having to be corrected by Me was really a *DOOH* moment. But hey, dontcha worry Janie, I got your butt covered, no matter what they're saying about you in that other thread....

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
No clue what you are talking about MB. Of course i know that trials are this weekend and that the team has not been officially announced or even definitively selected. But with Simone, Gabby AND Aly as good as locks, it was perfectly reasonable to say Aly is headed to Rio for her 2d Olympics. Many professional commentators are saying the same.
I have no problem admitting the times when I am mistaken about something. But this is not one of those times. Back to the drawing board Monkey Bars.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
For example:
"Rio will be big for Raisman and Douglas making long-awaited Olympic returns," Sports On Earth July 6
"Carly Patterson, the star of the 2004 Olympics, has little doubt who will lead the U.S. gymnastics team in Rio this summer.
It's the same three gymnasts almost everyone raves about -- Simone Biles and 2012 Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas and Ally Raisman.
But Patterson, the all-around champion in Athens 12 years ago, isn't nearly as sure about who will grab the final two spots when the team is picked at the U.S. trials Friday and Sunday at the SAP Center."
Mercury News July 6
Anyone who knows even a little about WAG, at this point pretty much assumes both Aly and Gabby are making their 2d trip to Olympics. Is it possible one or both will totally crash and burn this weekend thus forfeiting their berth? Yes. Likely? Not even remotely.
Even USA Gymnastics has posted the following on its facebook page "Raisman relishes role as 'Mama Aly' with second Olympic berth nearing in San Jose. "
As I said Monkey Bars, try again. Unless of course you feel you have to also "correct" the national governing board for women's artistic gymnastics in the U.S.

Well that settles it Gymmie. Why even have the trials and competition? the *experts* have decided who makes the team...Ya see, this is why Gymnastics, like Ballet, is not a true competitive sport - you just need the opinion of a self-proclaimed expert to decide who wins..
