Re: Eighth Week Dances
Is jazz a new dance that was just added this season? I don't remember them doing it in any other season.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
Nor do I, USN. It appears they're trying to emulate SYTYCD, which likely attracts a younger audience.
I'm not sure the addition of these numbers is fair to the broad range of celebs. Oldsters or overweighters won't have a prayer with points or votes. The likes of Wynona or Nancy Grace being repeatedly lifted in contemporary numbers is out of the question. How can you improve on something that can never happen? lol. And yikes - the injuries!
It may lead to more difficulty in getting celebs to participate to begin with.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
Singly - I don't believe that kind of jazz or contemporary dance would even be attempted by the heavier celebrities. I don't remember if Kirstie and Max danced any jazz or contemporary, and while she was on the chunky side, the woman could move, unlike the two you mentioned.
I feel there is going to be increasing trouble getting celebrities to participate on this show. They reached pretty far down in the barrel this year. The Voice is outdoing them in the ratings. Maybe it is just time to quietly close up and steal away. JMHO.

Exactly, newto. Kirstie could move. The woman has a lot of grace.
But I'm thinking that especially the contemporary numbers elicit an emotional response from voters. The sheer beauty strikes a chord. That's why I say it's unfair. Only certain celebs will be capable of performing such dances, giving them an advantage with viewers - regardless of how well an oldster does ballroom.
And you're NOT alone in your opinion about the door closing on the series. lol.

It must be, I don't remember them doing it in any other season either. I copied the following from WetPaint:
"We choose a pro that has already been kicked off," Peta explained to On the Red Carpet of the Trio Challenge, "and I know who I want to choose — I want to choose Sharna [Burgess],
she's my best friend and I think she's going to be amazing. We have
Jazz for Trio, so we can do lifts, finally. We've never had a dance
where we can perform lifts and he's strong and I really want to use that
ability. So yeah it's going to be great."
Peta also tweeted,
"OMG! I'm so thrilled and grateful to dance with @SeanLowe09 another
week! Hard work pays off huh

Re: Eighth Week Dances
Bis, you always contribute, one way or another.
Singly, I agree, some of these dances aren't fair to some of the oldest and overweight stars.
Kirstie was very light on her feet, and I believe Maks did do some lifts with her. They didn't have contemporary or jazz during her season, but she did do the freestyle.
I also thought Marissa Jaret Winokur and Ricki Lake were very light on there feet.

ITA..VERY light on their feet and good dancers. Picked it up quiclly and looked graceful.
This season, even though she is not really overweight, Allie is the one who has a lot of bulk. Look what lifting her did to Mark's back. She is not light on her feet and does not know how to "jump" before the lift even though she is an Ol;ympian./ When she walks it looks heavy.
Lifting for just a mement is not as difficult if the person being lifted gets into it the right way.

Good Morning Bis - what on earth is Afro - jazz? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Sounds like something they might have on "So You Think You Can Dance".
Hi SLA. Me to the rescue. Afro dance is a specific style of dance done in Africa (I guess that part is obvious:D) When I was teaching in NYC, we had a dance program and my class had a month of African dance. it looks like jazz so I guess that's why they call it Afro jazz. Kind of like Bollywood is Bollywood jazz. (Yes, from So You think You Can Dance). Gilles did Bollywood on DWTS on his season last fall.
African has a lot of stomping and bent arms and legs. it is very energetic and is not graceful looking--more like Cheetah nd Tarzan at a party. But it is fun to watch and catchy. The accompanying music is very tribal soundy. They have had music like thatin some of the movies that take place in parts of Africa. (A recent one on tv comes to mind..title has two women's names..something like Sarah and Mary, also there was Out of Africa and one more).
Sean coild do well with this since it is fast (the way he likes to dance) and not that graceful (good for him too) but it does have to be precise or it could look sloppy.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Eighth Week Dances
I remember the lift issue from SYTYCD, Vic. It was commented that lifting one of the females was like a feather - that she seemed to levitate.
I agree about Aly. I don't find her at all pleasing to watch. Her bulk is obvious BECAUSE she's not light on her feet. Not memorable when the show is over. I think the use of tumbling in those first dances was a big turn-off for me. Guess I never got over it. I find myself waiting for her to do it again instead of focusing on what she's currently doing.
She went from a stoic expression to completely over-the-top wild in that Samba. It was like: "What the h*ll is this?" I've always found Mark annoying in his exaggerated animation. He brought her right along with him. lol.

Good morning singly. Yes, ITA about Allie. Haven't enjoyed her at all. You know, I wrote that her samba lacked the basic Latin movement other than the shaking--the wild shaking as you put it. Was that a samba. Wasn't it salsa? I forget now and don't want to go get my notes. In any event, the whole dance was basically that shaking. When it came to the partner dancing, and moving around the floor, she just took these H E A V Y thud like steps that looked move like an elephant walking. One can be overweight but light on their feet. She is just bulky and heavy on her feet, and moves foreward in a weird way0--with her stomach and chest leading her. She does pick up the choreography but her performance is blah and ovedodin it, as you said, just made her look wild, not natural.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
PS Jazz and contemporary are not danced in the same way as Smooth Ballroom and Latin. They are not done in hold. Toouching is done to assist in lifts, drops, etc, and in the conveying of emotion. Jazz does not have th lifts that contemporary has. Contemporary has a lot of ballet elements. Jazz is sort of related to the jive and the lindy in a way. iIt is typically less flowy, yet, the two can be mistaken for each other depending on the tempo of the music and the choreography.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Some quick thoughts halfway through the show. If you don't want to know anything, skip this post til later.
When I write the judges scores, it is as they are seated, carrie, then Len, then Bruno.
Zendaya was great. Viennese Waltz. Playful, light on feet, fluid, smooth, intricate steps. me 10 Them 9 10 9
UH OH. It's now ove ran hour later. i couldn't pause the tv any longer so had to go finish the show. and I'm tired...big day tomorrow:)
Sean poor Sean, he should be the one to go tomorrow. he didn't do very well but made a valinat effort as always. it's kinda cute in a way..like a large puppy trying to please but knocking things over. That's how I see hi, sometimes:) Tango saw stress written all over his face. He almost danced into the floodlight on the dance floor. Awkward foot placement. When dancing forward in promenade postition, the face, body and FEET msust face forward in the direction one is dancing. His large foot kept going sideways at a perpendicular angle to Peta's. me7 them 777
Jacoby Viennese Waltz I wrote: "butt out' and "shirt taken off". he did a good job...had the gliding movements down pat. Me 9 them 999
NOTE Watch for the skybox interview when he is alone on the ocuch and brooke is talking to , I think it was Allie and Mark but maybe Kellie and derek. he is sitting there making weird faces, looking to his side, talking to I don't know who and it looks STRANGE to see him in dressed in a yellow bullfighter's regalia right behind the couple being interviewed. (Sorry I am tired so this may sound a bit disjointed)
Ingo Fox Trot He says during practice that he is exhausted, feel s sick from being sore and tired and then he comes out and gies a great performance. I wrote "a delight to watch". He had good posture and good foot placement,, an easy glide,a casual feel, looked like a natural. Me 8-9 not sure Them 888
Kellie Fox Trot Watch for Derek's hand on her breast (accidental) I only saw it because I replay things in slow motion and then get up and practice it. She had her back to him during a turn and his hand was in the wrong spot for a split second Wonder if she noticed:D Beacutiful dance, smooth, they were like a mirror image for most of it dancing in sync me 10, Them 9 9 10 AND carrie ann complimented her. Imagine that. She told her that she saw emotion tonight and that she went above and beyond the steps . And then carrie's stunning comment "This is the key to unlocking you as a winner!" Can yu believe it..from Carrie!!!
Allie Argentine Tango. Ok I am not a fan of Allie, seems that not many of us are, but she was really great at this dance. It was sexy(well, her moves were) and it was believable. Mark really trained her well. me 10 yes a 10 them 9 10 10
_____________________________________
The trio dances were really good. The music was perfect for each dance.
Zendaya Salsa magnifient perfect, all 3 in sync, so much going on yet no one was off.Meshed well, little hip hop break Me 10 them 10 10 10 First perfect score of the season. She could beat kellie. I didn't think so before but she is growing in leaps and bounds. This salsa was a joy to watch.
Sean Jazz Not too great, cute idea but he was off. he had his happy moves down. In the dance there was one move he could do successfully and it was repeated a few times. other than that, not great. Me 7 them 777 (He's officially in the bottom of the Leader Board.
Jacoby Paso Doble WOW!!!! beautiful paso sakirts flying, an A+ routine with Cheryla and karina (two fabulous female pros). he had the powerful masterful bullfighter moves. Commanded the stage me 9-10 not sure Them 898 I thought he was better than what they said.
Ingo Jive. Cute routine, he kept up and didn't miss a step but Ingo did not have the technique tha the had the first number. He had a tough practice week so I guess one dance had to suffer and this was it. He din't kick high or sharp enough and his toes were not pointed (called the kicks and flicks). Me 8 them 888 (Remember i thought his first dance could have been an ().
Kellie Paso Doble LEN"S MAJOR MELTDOWN TIRADE HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT which luckily Tom Bergeron was able to ad lib about. Intense. I thought he'd turn red and pass out. he was hsouting and screaming, mainly furious with Derek or not including certain Paso steps. he always hates the razz amatazz and he said that this was just loud music and flashing lights and crashing mirrors. My thoughts: there are a lot of variations one can do in a dance besides the baic steps. i saw many in this Paso. i saw flair, drama, and a well executed piece. Nothing was hidden because the concept. No inepitude was being covered up. I wrote"wow! Dark world captured by all three. Dramatic. Precise, sharp, staccato" which is how it should be. Kelly channeled the part perfectly. me 10 them 10, 7, 10 yesm len gave her a 7!!!!
Allie JiveShe was so busy counting the beat that her performance suffered. She di the steps but it was not so believable. She did much better in the first dance. She danced the teps well, but there wasn't much of a connection. me 8-9 Them 999
That's it folks. This was an effort but I love you gals andI know how much SLA counts on me (my fan club president).
I will be busy with my mother but will check in for comments. Hope this helps you all out to nitice some things thatyou might not have noticed. Some of you don' t need my help at all --you seem to have done well without me last week

Re: Eighth Week Dances
I think Sean's a goner this week. I thought Ingo was going to be one, too, after they showed the clip of his practice session (it was just so negative and I thought that would hurt him) until I saw his dance, which wasn't bad.
I don't see why they think all the flips and cartwheels are necessary. The lifts, now, those I can see. And, doing all of this in heels - no way.
The heavier, older dancers are definitely at a disadvantage. Ingo made a comment this week that he could only work out so many hours a day - he's one of the older ones, too. The pros are in incredible shape.
I thought Zendaya looked great in that longer dress - she didn't look so gangly and awkward. Overall, I think I liked Kellie's dance the best. I think it is going to be difficult for the judges to pick a winner this time.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
JMHO but I'd give anything for Zendaya to win. Derek has won so many trophies and I find his dance styles are pretty repetitive from year to year. You can almost predict what he is going to do in a particular dance.
As I posted elsewhere, I'd love it if Val could take home the trophy for his family since Maks has never won despite all his efforts.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
I don't know where everyone was looking but Aly's legs were wonky on two of those lifts.
The stand-outs for me were Zen and Kellie. Z's Foxtrot was delightful and had me smiling all the way through. She looked like someone out of an old Shirley Jones/Jane Powell-type musical. Innocent, fun and flirtatious. Sweet and smooth.
As much as Kellie's dancing, Derek's transitional piece was genius. It was captivating to watch. And Tristan, the little dickens. Woo-hoo.
Jacoby is fun to watch, but his "leaps" are getting as old as Aly's previous tumbling penchant. The first one was surprising but three dances later, it's annoying. As I said, he's fun to watch - until he's done dancing. The mush-mouth and facial expressions are irritating - as self-important and in-your-face as his mama.
As for Sean, I don't think Bach Nation can save him after last night's poor performances. Ingo did much better in spite of his exhaustion.
That's my amateur take on things.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
Singly - ITA agree with you about Sean. It's time for him to go. Really hasn't shown much of any improvement over the weeks.
As for Jacoby, what comes out of his mouth is typical for a Baltimore Ravens football player. Sorry to offend if any of you are Ravens fans, but they are a mouthy lot. The team is 15 miles from my house, and their antics are always in the media. And don't get me started on his mama.

Re: Eighth Week Dances
Oh boy. What to say about last night?
Zendaya was fabulous. I loved her foxtrot - so light and breezy and fun. Loved her trio dance as well. I thought she should have gotten two 30s. She was for me definitely the cream of the crop last night.
I was not impressed with Aly last night. I didn't care much for her AT. I don't know - nothing seemed really crisp and sharp and staccato to me. The lifts were awkward in places. She did the steps okay, but as others have said, she is not light on her feet. I didn't care for her trio dance either. She did it okay, but for me it was nothing to write home about.
Kellie was wonderful as usual. I really liked both of her dances and put her a hair under Zendaya. I don't know what Len was going on about. That was pretty over-the-top and makes me wonder if Kellie isn't getting the votes they expected and are trying to motivate her fans to vote. But a 7 for that paso was just absurd.
I hate to say this, but I think I'm over Jacoby. I can't stand his mom, and for that reason alone I want him gone. She's obnoxious! But all his dances are starting to look the same to me. I'm completely over his jumping over people. I'm over the splits (which at least we didn't get to see last night). And I'm starting to get annoyed that he doesn't really seem to me to be improving any longer. His feet are still weird, his posture is often poor, he just looks sloppy to me often, and I want to see more than that. He's still fun to watch, but it's not quite enough. I thought he fared better in the V.Waltz than the paso. I really didn't like that paso at all. Maybe he was trying too hard, but it seemed too much to me. Not fluid enough maybe or something? I don't really know, but I felt like he had the stomping down but nothing else. Again, I just want to see more from him; it feels to me like he's cruising.
Ingo - I thought he did well in both of his dances, but the jive was a bit out of control. But he was enjoyable to watch.
Sean - I just don't enjoy watching him dance. He has no grace, very little fluidity. He seems like a nice enough guy, but on the dance floor he strikes me as very much of a "bull in a china shop." I thought he was going to dance Peta right into the light in the first dance.
If I had to pick right now, my final 3 would be Zendaya, Kellie and Ingo, and that surprises the heck out of me.
