Season 21 - Week 4
Here is the listing of who is dancing to what in week 4 from PureDWST:
ETA: According to this interview, Andy and Allison are dancing to his new single “Good To Be Alive” for their next dance. DWTSGossip is also confirming.
ETA2: Source says Paula has “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, and that Tamar has foxtrot.
ETA3: Source shared Alek’s song & dance. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m stoked to see him do paso – and I kind of love the sentiment of the song chosen: “Don’t wake me up when it’s all over.” He’s loving the crazy experience he’s had in the last month [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] -Court-
ETA4: True story: When I was little, I thought the ladies singing Tamar’s song were saying “Marmoset there’ll be days like this, there’ll be days like this, marmoset.” Apparently I thought tiny primates had very rough lives. -Court-
ETA5: Alexa’s song seems to be one that people either love or hate. I fall in the latter camp [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] -Court-
ETA6: According to DWTSGossip, Tamar told Wendy Williams that she’s practicing the rumba. Sounds like Val changed the song and dance style yet again. He can’t seem to hang with what he’s handed and that says a lot. ~Heidi
ETA7: George Penacchio confirmed that Bindi & Derek have “Every Breath You Take”. I had heard that either Bindi or Hayes had it, but couldn’t decide which one it made more sense for… – Court-
ETA8: I give up… -Court-

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Note: Alek flew home to Roseburg today because of the horrific shooting that took place yesterday at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. He had been planning on taking courses there this fall until the "hero" thing happened to him and his friends. He felt he needed to go home at this very sad time for his community that is very small (only has a population of around 22,000) and very close knit. I did not hear if Lindsay was going with him or not - nothing was mentioned about her on our local news only that Alek was flying home. I don't know how this will affect his performance on Monday night but I'm sure it will be weighing on him. I know the shooting has been weighing on me and most Oregonians so I can't imagine what he must be feeling and if he knew any of the deceased or wounded.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Thanks for the info, SLA. I really hate Most Memorable Year week. So many choose sob stories, as if there's nothing happy or good in their lives that's memorable. And then the young ones always end up looking 'bad,' so to speak, because they haven't lived long enough to have any really memorable years. Sucks.
I tend to get my spoilers from Wetpaint or one of the other sites. PureDWTS is so anti-Val I can't stand it. To read their comment about changing from a foxtrot to a rumba, you'd think Val does that every week. And he doesn't. None of them do. But all of them have changed music or styles at one time or another. And naturally it must be Val's fault. No possibility that Tamar, after realizing that Nick was using a Backstreet Boys song and Andy was using his newest release, decided she wanted to dance to one of her songs instead of whatever she originally picked. Nope. Must be Val. Just because it's those people, and if Val won a million dollars in the lottery and gave it all to help the homeless, they'd find something to fault him for about it. Like he only did it for publicity or something.
None of the other sites I've checked had any additional updates, although one did speculate on whether Alek would be back to dance tonight. I can't imagine he wouldn't. What happened was a real tragedy, but there's really nothing he can do there. I can understand wanting to go home at a time like this, but I expect that Sharna went with him, and they'll be back to dance tonight.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
You know LM I don't really pay much attention to what is said above the listing of the dances and songs. I like Val and therefore maybe I will just copy the part listing the dances and songs. It's funny but the Derek fans feel they are always picking on Derek. Maybe they switched to Val this year because he won last year. I had never looked at this site before this year. I agree that Tamar was the one that wanted to change the music to her own song and not Val and therefore Val had to change the dance to go with the music.LadyMustang65 wrote:Thanks for the info, SLA. I made a mistake in my post above when I put Sharna's name down when it is Lindsay that is his partner and I believe she did go with him and they flew back last night.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
That infamous Pure site has been on an anti Chmerkovskiy tirade forever, it seems. They despised (and still do) Maks and now Val is their main target of nastiness. They totally adore and venerate everything Derek but it is so junior high to hate whomever ISN'T your chosen one. Ridiculous really, Val and Derek don't feel animosity toward each other.
I fully expect Alek will dance tonight as Lindsay apparently accompanied him to his home town so rehearsals could go on.
This Most Memorable Year theme is always a good one to get over with, at least for me.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Derek's choreo for Bindi was inspired - brilliant. A first for me: I cried as I envisioned Bindi doing those moves with her father.
On the down side, I thought Andy's cha-cha looked like "The Allison Show."
I was also annoyed with Bruno telling Paula to "camp it up." Paula isn't there to do a comedy routine for him. She tries, and seemed to put forth a good effort until the last third, when she lost her focus. My, the lady has some legs, yes?
Stumble aside, I didn't really care for Alexa and Mark's routine. The remainder (Gary excluded) were enjoyable to watch.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Yeah, I'm not a fan of most memorable year either because it's so rare for people to choose something happy that they celebrate. For me, either of the years my parents died are not what I would choose for most memorable. They were painful years that I would love to forget. I'd choose the years my kids were born or the year I got married or hopefully this year if my long-awaited knee surgery goes as well as I hope, and I can finally walk pain-free. Those are 'memorable.'
But I do have to say this year was better than most. I think only Bindi and Tamar went the 'sob story' route, and even Tamar's had a happy ending.
Alexa struggled with her dance. She did okay, but it was not really good. Gary was definitely the worst - it didn't seem like he was even bothering to try to 'dance' the steps - just walking through everything. I do think it was his time to go, even though I will miss Anna. Paula was okay but again not really good, but I do like Louis, so I'm okay with seeing him another week or two. Hayes was, I thought, a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed his. Andy's was good but again not great. I really wish he had another pro. And speaking of pros, congratulations to Allison on her pregnancy, but I'm not sure I want to see a 6-months' pregnant pro out there. That may sound weird, but it's not that I have anything against pregnant women. I was one twice. I just know that it will throw off some of the lines, and in some dances where they have to be close, it'll make things awkward. And maybe she's in such good shape that she won't get tired, but I could see it disrupting their training time. But then again, I'm not sure he'll make it that much longer anyway. As much as he seems like a real nice guy, he's one of the weaker dancers left.
Let's see - my favorites were Tamar, Nick and Bindi. I thought that was a beautiful rumba, and I didn't catch any of that 'vacant' face last night. So that's good. Nick's dance was my absolute favorite. It was fun, and it was great to see the rest of the band there as well as Joey Fatone. I do like him a lot. I thought Bindi's dance was nice, but I cynically predicted as soon as I realized (a) it was a 'dead-dad dance' (think Mia's from SYTYCD) and (b) she was going last that she would get the first 10 of the season. I did like the dance, but I wouldn't have given it a 10. Maybe it was just me, but I thought she looked awkward in a couple of places. Anyway, all 9s would have been more than appropriate, I thought. Even an 8 would not have seemed out of place to me. The 10 is one of those times I think it was an inevitability, even if the dance didn't necessarily warrant it.
I like Alfonso a lot, but he's no Tom Bergeron. I really missed Tom last night. It was so weird not to hear his voice.
It will be interesting to see who gets who in the switch-up next week. Since I don't tweet (I have a twitter account but it's a work account so no way I'm 'voting' for DWTS on it), I had no opportunity to take part. Personally, I'd like to see Val with Bindi. He did such a great job with Zendaya that I'd like to see what he can do with her. I'd like to see Derek get Paula and Louis get Alexa. Let Mark work with Tamar. I'd love to see what Anna could have done with Andy, but that's not an option now. Maybe give Andy to Lindsay to see what she can do with him? I don't know, and since I couldn't vote, I really having been thinking about it much. So I'll be surprised next week, although what would not surprise me is to see Derek and Mark just switch partners. Their fans seem to like to do that.
Speaking of Derek, Mark and Val (yeah, I know we weren't but we are now!), did anyone besides me love the fact that after Val and Tamar danced and they were up in the box with Erin, Derek came over to congratulate Val, and the two hugged in the background? I loved that!! Anything that helps put the lie to the idea there's some kind of animosity between the Mark/Derek camp and the Val/Tony camp is just fine with me. That seemed like a real genuine moment, especially since it was done in the background rather than front and center to call attention to it. That was maybe my favorite moment of the whole night.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Regarding B & D and that 10 for a dance that should have garnered only 9's - the team dances will be making their appearance in the coming weeks and the captains become captains on cumulative judges scores. So slipping an extra point in for Derek and his partner every now and again is groundwork to ensure Derek's captaincy.
Yes, I know, I'm cynical but DWTS is nothing if not predictable.

Lesallee - I do believe you're right. I never considered that, but I do think they would naturally want Derek as one of the captains. I mean Derek's partner, of course. ;0

Well I see once again not one mention of Alek in the critique of the show last night. Some of us happen to like him and I think he did a good job especially in light of the devastating occurrence that happened in his home town and the college he had attended.

I will mention Alek right here and now, SLA because I am an admirer of him! It wasn't the best dance he has done but I applaud his efforts honouring his fluffy little dance show obligations all the while in an emotional turmoil. He seems such a nice, unassuming young man and he truly is learning to dance. Alek and Lindsay please me with every performance.SLA44 wrote:Well I see once again not one mention of Alek in the critique of the show last night. SLA, I'm in awe of Alek's dance abilities. However, last night's performance wasn't up to the standard he set in previous weeks. Given what's happened, I couldn't blame him for being distracted. The Paso simply didn't seem like his kind of dance.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
I agree Singly but he still did better than some of the others and his Paso wasn't that bad either. It's one of the dances that I like least of all the dances and I'm sure Alek was distracted somewhat so I give him credit for doing what he did do. I do think he is learning his dances very well and think he and Lindsay have very good chemistry on the dance floor.singlyme wrote:SLA44 wrote:Well I see once again not one mention of Alek in the critique of the show last night. On a side note, Maks is going to be the guest judge next week.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
SLA - I didn't even realize I hadn't mentioned Alek in my comments. I do try to mention everyone. I like Alek. He seems like a real decent, down-to-earth kind of guy. I think he's been picking up the dancing fairly well, all things considered, but he's been up and down for me. I really liked his first dance. The next week where there were two dances, I didn't care for the jazz/contemporary/whatever it was supposed to be, but I thought his other dance that week was quite nice. I liked his dance last week. The paso, I thought, was okay. I do like a paso when it's done well. I understand all the emotions he was carrying around, and I guess I expected that this dance would be right up his alley calling for strong movements and body language. But he definitely didn't seem like he really wanted to be there on Monday. I don't blame him for that, but for me it affected his performance. He seemed to do the steps just fine, but there was no fire, no passion that I could see. So the end result felt very cold - the exact opposite of what a paso should feel like. So this week was a miss for me. Still his misses are better than some people's best. I threw some votes his way, as I have every week. But I didn't really like this particular dance that much. I do think he and Lindsay are a good pairing - they seem to really like each other and work well together, and I've been mostly enjoying her choreography this season.
I had not heard that Maks would be back next week. Did they mention it on Monday and I missed it? Anyway, I agree with Single. Maks is yummy, and I'm looking forward to seeing him again. It probably won't happen, but I'd love it if he got a chance to dance, even if it's just a few seconds as part of his intro.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Saw a photo of the glorious Maks and beautiful Peta at the Golden Palm awards a couple of days ago. Maks had let his natural curls loose and he looked scrumptious! I hope that is the look we see next Mon.
Paso Doble: The Paso benchmark for me remains Maks and Mel B, even after all this time. It was jaw dropping and I watch it every now and again.

I'm with you, Lesallee. The Maks/MelB paso is my all-time favorite on this show. That was just spectacular. I also loved their waltz where Mel B did that "split walk." I've never seen anyone else do that, and it was just breathtaking. That pairing is definitely one of all-time favorite couples ever on DWTS.

Re: Season 21 - Week 4
Alek's long time childhood friend Spencer Stone is in critical condition following surgery after having been stabbed several times in Sacramento last evening.

Spencer Stone was one of the three that stopped the terrorist on the French train a few months ago. I cannot even begin to imagine what emotions Alek is going through right now and wonder if he will be able to continue with DWTS. It has to be really hard for him to concentrate or learning a new dance right now. Prayers are sent out to Spencer and his family and also for Alek for all the emotional turmoil he has recently been going through.
