Season 19 Week 4
Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 4 – Who’s
Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)
Well, some interesting dances this week. I will have to see all of the song/dance combinations to see if I really believe these songs were chosen by the dancers. Bethany and Janel having the same style AGAIN stretches credulity a bit far, if you ask me. It also occurs to me that the reason Alfonso was underscored last week is because they knew he’d come roaring back with “the Carlton” this week.
Jonathan and Allison – Contemporary (song: “Dance with My Father” by Luther Vandross )
Vote: 1-800-868-3406
Betsey and Tony – Jive

Janel and Val – Rumba

Tommy and Peta – Jive (song: “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley )

Re: Season 19 Week 4
Should be interesting. I think Lea will handle contemporary just fine, but I'm afraid the jive might be the downfall for both Betsy and Tommy, although they may well surprise me. Alfonso should do well with jazz. And yes it's odd that Janel and Bethany are doing the same dance two weeks in a row. Anyone else get the feeling TPTB are trying to set up a rivalry there?

Re: Season 19 Week 4
Anything is possible, mustang. And the two oldsters will be pitted against each other for the jive.
I can only imagine Michael and a Quickstep. My eyes! Can't warm up to this guy. Can't dance and I don't think he's funny. If anything, he seems to act like he's slow.

And hear I was trying so hard not to even think about Michael and the quickstep. You just had to go there, didn't you.
A bit off topic, but my dh and I are fans of "Nashville." Just got a chance to watch last night's episode off the DVR. I had no idea Derek Hough was doing a guest spot on the show. Don't know why - from the small bit they showed, he's not any better at acting than his sister. Ugh.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
I've heard Alfonso is doing the Carlton. I never watched Fresh Prince and I got the idea he was doing his own thing. Now, I see that it's under the guise of jazz.
You know, I don't like this sort of thing. It's reminiscent of what they do on SYTYCD. I absolutely hate it when they have those hip hop guys and fit their style into so many of the categories they're supposed to be dancing. Jazz? Let's add some hip hop. Contemporary? Let's add some hip hop moves.
I don't watch Nashville. Mainly because I'm not a fan of country music. lol. I didn't realize Derek was branching out into acting. He and Julianne like the spotlight and they're talented. I've never seen either act, so I have no opinion there. They both seem to have the drive to reach for their stars. I give them credit for working to fulfill their dreams.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
I like the show Nashville and I'm a so-so country music listener. I'm more into rock and classic rock. It's just a good show. I saw the previews that Derek was going to be on there. Couldn't tell from the small clip how good of an actor he is. I like Julianne as a dancer but have not been impressed with her acting. Her part was so small in Burlesque and her hair was dark that it took watching it a few times to even realize it was her. She was a bit cheesy in Rock Of Ages and she seemed a little lost as the lead in Safe Haven. I only watched that for Josh Duhamel. She seemed a bit lame in the remake of Footloose as well, except for the dancing. Maybe she would benefit from some acting lessons.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
Singly - the "Carleton" was something he did on the show to "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones, which I understand is the song he'll be dancing to tonight. I suspect it's just going to be a short bit of the dance, since people familiar with the show will expect to see it. It's not really anything - it was something he made up that people really liked. He kind of 'spazzes' out, and it's really fun. But I would guarantee it's not all he'll do - it'll just be a small part of it because it would be sacriligious for him not to do it.

DANCING WITH THE STARS
RECAP FOR OCTOBER 6, 2014
Hello, and welcome to Dancing With The Stars on ABC. Tonight, our remaining ten couples will dance to a song that represents their most memorable year.

Memorable Year: 2002, when she moved to LA to pursue her dreams.

Commentary: Hearing about her mentor dying really broke my heart. I am in tears watching this because I know exactly what it feels like to lose a mentor. The dance was beautiful and I bet my bottom dollar that her mentor BJ is smiling down from heaven.
Julianne: She thinks her mentor would be very proud. Her technique is awesome as well.
Bruno: She looks like an exotic angel who took him to the Garden of Eden.

OMG, this Mean Girls homage is the best damn thing ever. It is one of my favorite movies and this is my favorite shows, so it is perfect. I am just glad he is safe this week because this just proved they had NO business being in the bottom two last week. The energy and the choreography were just amazing.
Bruno: He offers places to improve, but he loved it.
Carrie Ann: She wants to see more technique and elegance.
Julianne: She agrees with Carrie Ann and wants to see him be more refined.

Bethany, if you are reading this, I am SO sorry you went through this, and I am sorry if any of my comments came across as offensive. You are amazing, girl!
This is by far one of the best dances we have seen on the show. I wish I could say more, but I am crying too much.
Julianne: She tearfully tells her she loves what she stands for, but she wanted more rumba content.
Bruno: He offers some advice on where to improve, but overall he loves everything about it.
Carrie Ann: It was gorgeous.

Celebrity: Michael Waltrip
Claim To Fame: Racecar driver
Pro: Emma Slater

As for the dance, all I can say is he gave it all he had and it just made me smile. He is amazing.
Bruno: He can tell he is trying, but he needs to work on his frame.
Carrie Ann: It started off strong, but he lost it.

Celebrity: Antonio Sabato, Jr
Claim To Fame: General Hospital star and Calvin Klein model
Pro: Cheryl Burke
Memorable Year: 1989, getting in a Janet Jackson video
Dance: Samba
Commentary: It is so cute that his mom came to his rehearsals. As for the samba….shirtless Antonio…..did Cheryl even dance? Seriously though, that is one of his best dances and it is nice to see him relax as he performs.
Julianne: She liked it, but he needs to work on filling space.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
Clearly that reviewer and I are on a different wavelength. I hated everything about Sadie's dance, especially the family. ABC crossed a line when they allowed the grandfather to come out there. Her costume was not attractive on her at all, and Mark's was downright hideous. Even he didn't look good dancing. The duck calls and the stupid flapping arms were annoying in the extreme. As for her dancing, I really couldn't tell. I honestly found the costumes that distracting and awful that I just could not get into that dance at all. If I had been taking part in the raise-your-paddles, I would have given that no more than a 6 or a 7. Worst dance of the night for me.
Alfonso/Witney, Val/Janel and Lea/Artem were the best of the night for me. I loved them all, but I do agree with the reviewer that having Alfonso do The Carlton was just the icing on the cake. I loved it, and it definitely made me smile and took away the sour taste in my mouth from the previous performer. Just a terrific way to end the night, and he so deserved those scores.
Betsy and Tommy both struggled with the jive, not surprisingly, but I still thought they were better than Michael. I just don't understand why he is still here. He is so clearly the weakest dancer left. Really sad to see Betsy go over him.
The rest I thought were good but not great. I definitely would not have scored Michael higher than Jonathan, even though he seemed a bit off last night. I hope he's not the next one to go. I have a feeling he will do much better next week with a different pro. I would love to see him with Cheryl. I think she could bring a lot more out of him.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
I don't disagree with any of your commentary, mustang.
It surprised me when they said public judging would be two minutes and begin at the START of each dance. Kind of says you can vote for your fave even if he's about to fall on his face.
So:
Janel & Val: Rhumba. I saw parts that looked somewhat awkward. It wasn't all that good. I gave it a 7 1/2.
Jonathan & Allison: Or should I say Allison & Jonathan? Samba. Lord, what a camera hog. It was pretty bad. All those facial poses for the camera, and she's overdanced him each week. Teaching him to dance seems secondary to her. First being to show off for the camera. She dances like a crazed bear. I gave it a 6.
Betsey & Tony: Jive. Better than Jonathan. Better than people half her age. Gotta love her. I gave her a 7.
Bethany & Derek: Rhumba. Huh? Was that a rhumba or interpretive dance? What the hell was that? I gave it a 7.
Michael & Emma: Quickstep. He tries, but he just can't dance. My Score: 5
Lea & Artem: Comtemporary. I actually choked up, which is extremely uncommon for me. I found it absolutely breathtaking. Her ballet training was obvious. I loved this dance. My Score: 10 1/2.
Antonio & Cheryl: Samba. There's a stiffness somewhere, rib cage or waist? Not horrible but not good either. My Score: 7. PS: Cheryl looks like such a cute little pixie. I enjoy her.
Tommy & Peta: Jive. I just don't know. I'll give him a 6 for steps, and an 8 for energy = Average: 7
Sadie & Mark: Samba. I realize this was a play on the ducks, BUT... Mark went from a gorilla suit to a guerilla suit. It looked like Bin Laden chasing the Road Runner. Sorry. I was too distracted to watch the dance (like you, mustang). This was a fail for me. Surprised to see 9s from the judges. I gave them a 6.
Alfonso & Witney: Jazz. Actually Broadway Jazz and it was great. I gave them a 9.
It should have been Michael who went home. I know it's the premise of the show, but I really hate to see a potential dancer go home when fan-dom outweighs the ability to dance. I'll miss seeing what more Betsey could do. And I know Michael isn't going to get much better.
I liked Jenna on SYTYCD but as a member of the troupe, I'm finding her as predatory with the camera as Allison is.
Julianne must really be taking in the audience reaction to her clothing and hair. Kudos to her. I liked her hair last night, but I've never understood "long blonde hair, long black roots." I'm respecting her commentary because there's no shtick involved (Carrie's drooling and falling off her chair or Bruno's drooling and gyrations). She's been kind and instructive.
Even with only three judges, Tom seemed to be cutting them off to save time. And we've lost players, so I don't understand why we're still strapped for time. Too much wasted with Erin?

Re: Season 19 Week 4
Well I guess I will have to go find the videos on youtube and watch these dances. I am anxious to see Lea's dance and did see some of Alfonso's on GMA this morning but would like to see the whole thing. What little I saw was really good.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
I think the best dance in my opinion was Lea and Artem. I found myself getting choked up as you did, singly.
Janel and Val, Alfonso and Witney, Bethany and Derek, and Sadie and Mark were under that and the others are struggling.
I didn't see anything wrong with Sadie and Mark's dance. Yes, the costumes were really out there but Duck Dynasty is about a Louisiana family that hunts. Camouflage is the dress code. It would look kind of funny if Mark came out wearing regular dance clothes. Sadie was a duck. I get why they dressed her that way. And btw, Sadie's grandfather was not there. You may have him confused with her Uncle Si.

rkc I just went and looked at Lea and Artem's dance and you are correct in it did choke me up as well and I thought it was beautiful. These are the only two dances that I have seen so far and I think America got it wrong on this dance it definitely deserved a 10 straight across the board IMO.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
rkc - I stand corrected. I do get them confused. To me they're both older guys with gross beards. Si's the one who makes all the inappropriate comments, right? Anyway, I understand what the show is about, but honestly, I thought Mark looked just awful in that camo outfit. Or maybe the camo would have been okay without the awful beard. He kind of looked like Fidel Castro to me. The torso part on Sadie wasn't too bad, but I hated the fringe at the feet and the stuff on her arms and eyes. I just found it very distracting - both of them. On another board, when it was announced that Mark would be paired with Sadie, the very first post wanted to know how long it would be until Mark dressed Sadie up like a duck. So this was just so very predictable.

Re: Season 19 Week 4
mustang, for me Mark looked like a young Bin Laden and I couldn't get past it. But Castro would fit, as well. And I believe it was the beard. I wasn't thinking "dynasty." I didn't mind Sadie's costume.
SLA, I'm glad you enjoyed Lea and Artem's dance. It was SO beautiful, wasn't it?

Yeah, they could have gone without the beard on Mark but I guess they thought it was funny.
SLA, glad you posted the video of Lea and Artem's dance so I could watch it again. Bring on the tissues....

Lea's dance was gorgeous, and I loved that Artem got so emotional on her behalf. That was really sweet, and they seem like a terrific partnership. And I've re-watched Alfonso's dance several times already. Just makes me smile.
