Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Update:
“Episode 2307” – The eight remaining celebrities will dance to some of the most popular songs throughout the decades, as “Eras Night” comes to “Dancing with the Stars,” live, MONDAY, OCTOBER 24 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network.
Len Goodman returns as head judge for this special night of dancing, which showcases popular music throughout the eras from the 1920s through the 1990s. Each celebrity will perform either a quickstep, rumba, Charleston, jive, tango, foxtrot, samba or jitterbug.
Calvin and Lindsay – 1950’s Jive (song: “Good Golly Miss Molly” by Little Richard)
James and Sharna – 1940’s Jitterbug (song: “In the Mood” by Glenn Miller And His Orchestra)
Jana and Gleb – 1970s Samba (song: “Get Down Tonight” by KC and the Sunshine Band)
Laurie and Val – 1960’s Quickstep (song: “One Fine Day” by The Chiffons)
Marilu and Derek – 1920’s Charleston (song: “Never Forget You” by Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox feat. Addie Hamilton)
Maureen and Artem – 1980s Tango (song: “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi)
Ryan and Cheryl – 1990’s Rumba (song: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith)
Terra and Sasha – 1930’s Foxtrot (song: “Cheek to Cheek” by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong)
In addition, the celebrities and their pros will be grouped into two teams – Team Past and Team Future – with each performing a dance to celebrate songs and dance styles from previous decades through present day. The team dance scores will be combined with the celebrity’s individual dance scores for a final tally.
Team Past: Freestyle (song: “The Skye Boat Song” by Raya Yarbrough – theme from Outlander)
James & Sharna
Calvin & Lindsay
Ryan & Cheryl
Maureen & Artem
Team Future: Freestyle (song: some instrumental, futuristic EDM song)
Laurie & Val
Terra & Sasha
Marilu & Derek
Jana & Gleb
At the end of evening, one couple will be eliminated from the ballroom competition.
For week seven, viewers may cast their votes for their favorite couples via phone on Monday night during and up to 60 minutes after the end of the “Dancing with the Stars” broadcast in each time zone. Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Since Laurie got first pick, I gather that she chose Derek & Marilu. Then James got second pick and he chose Lindsay and Calvin.
I think the teams would have been very different if Maks had not been eliminated.

I agree that it probably would have been different. I'm disappointed that James didn't get Marilu and Derek because I would have loved to see James dancing alongside Derek.

Derek must be disappointed, too. He would have loved having a chance to hang out with James. He's getting a new experience here, of having no control of where he is placed.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Scratching my head a little regarding the team dance music that is being used this season. Team Future gets a futuristic instrumental piece that apparently is unknown to us and maybe even to them at this point and may be a challenge to choreograph. We don't even know who the composer is. Then there is Team Past with perhaps the slowest team dance song ever (please correct me if I'm wrong on this). The Skye Boat Song (the Outlander show theme) is lovely though, and there is already some thinking that Team Past will go Scottish and maybe the men will wear kilts. I was hoping for an upbeat, fun song but this will be interesting.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
You're right about the music choices -- they are very weird.
The "Future" music has been variously described as "like Hunger Games with church music" or "Like Riverdance in Space".
Trying to make ANY sense out of that (we still don't know the title of this music), it seems to me that both Past and Future have a Celtic flavor. And if Derek is hearing "Riverdance" in his music, then it must have a regular percussion -- and we know he is particularly sensitive to percussion. But the "church music" bit ? Are we thinking chanting monks effect? Or maybe the choir effect from "2001 Space Odyssey"?
Anyway, "Past" can waltz throughout their song, and everyone will look great. It is a beautiful song.
But Future? They sure sound screwed to me... but maybe they can dress Terra as an R2D2 character to bring humor to their offering...

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Terra is on Team Future. Both teams actually have a height challenge of sorts in that Future has petite Terra and Past has the taller Calvin.
The slower song will likely be good for Maureen, and I couldn't help wondering if that was part of the reasoning for that song choice. I'm guessing that we might get a more period Scottish dance from Team Past and a more Riverdance approach (with likely more WOW factor) from Team Future. If Team Past can somehow create a beautiful yet precise dance with some personality, maybe there is a chance.

Sorry, that was a mis-Type. I meant "Future" -- Star Wars' R2D2 would go with the future, naturally! I have corrected it.
I'm not so sure that "Future" is any faster... church music?

James gets another first of getting to do the first Jitterbug the show has done in awhile. We have yet to see a truly happy lively dance from James and Sharna, so this will be a good challenge for them. I want them to really knock everyone's socks off.

They could have come up with better music for some of the decades, especially the 70's and 80's. I knew Jana would get 60's or 70's.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
I think the worst song on the list has to be Derek's... it is toneless and totally forgettable -- and that is NOT what anyone expects with a Charleston. I can't even get through the whole video without wanting to shut it off.
But James got a terrific song! Should be a showstopper for them.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Addie Hamilton isn't doing it for me on that song either. At least it will be a shortened version.
Something I had totally forgotten about the jitterbug is that it has lifts. I hope James doesn't injure himself this week. Also, I don't think Sharna has had to create a jitterbug before, so this may be a first for her.

Cheek to Cheek for Terra and Sasha???? Come on, someone in production has a slightly warped sense of humour.

I imagine a Tango to that to be similar in nature to Bindi's AC/DC tango.

Ok I'm not understanding this.....so terra has a Tango...right? You have given sasha so much credit...I do not understand the jokes about she an sasha being able to do a perfectly good tango.?!?!

Terra and Sasha have a foxtrot, sis.
I just hope that song assignment of Cheek to Cheek doesn't hold them up to be snickered at. I honestly think it was a deliberate choice on the part of TPTB.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Thanks sis I saw something about a tango.... I swear when I looked earlier the songs and dances were not on this thread .....my bad... then the cheek to cheek thing makes sense kind of like them giving amber the booty song. We are getting down to the 'rigged part' that some on this board want to ignore.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
A poster on another board who was a bit incensed about that Cheek to Cheek song said it is more accurately going to be Cheek to Crotch. That's sad and Terra and Sasha don't deserve to have those kind of remarks bandied about.

Due to the fact that the information comes out in drips and drabs, the first post in these weekly threads is a work in progress until ABC publishes their press release. So, I keep adding and editing until that release comes out.
After the broadcast, I will also do a post with the scores and another post with a link to the dances, so we have all the info in one thread.
