I know nothing about the business relationships, so maybe you're right for these two event nights. I do remember Rumer refused to do Frozen, leave that up to Nastia, and play Ursula from Little Mermaid instead- which resulted in two great performances. On the other hand, how often have pros stated they weren't happy with the music they were given?

Oh, ordinarily I would agree with you. At the beginning of the season, the pros are asked to submit music they would like to dance to for the season, and the show does their best to get clearance for them and that takes time. But the show also goes and gets a bunch of songs on their own before the season begins, perhaps with Mandy Moore's input for her bits, and Disney supplies songs that they both want to promote and can create quick animation for on Disney night. So if none of the music choices a pro has submitted comes through in time, the pros are simply assigned songs, with limited choices or opportunity to change. As the show nears the finals, the pros have much more control over the music, and they have complete control over the Freestyle music.

I assume it gets easier towards the end of the season simply because there are less couples left, but still a bundle of songs already cleared. I also believe there's quite a lot of promotion from the record companies going on. They always have many songs from the pop and dance charts.

Pros can also call song artists themselves to get the ball rolling for clearance. I know Derek has done that quite a few times, ex., Sia's songs, Mark Ballas's song, Andy Grammer's song, Ameksa, and others. Hayes Grier got his friend's song "Stitches" that way, Mark got the Nintendo song that way, and any time a singer has been on the show and has danced to his or her own song the clearance came through because the wheels were greased by personal appeal.

I'm looking forward to this week's performances. The set designs for each should be inventive and it may push the pros to be more creative. Last week's show felt rushed and the set designs were simply light shows (that many times obscured the dances). The collaboration with cirque may have eased some of the music licensing, but not for the cirque shows that are based on famous musicians such as the Beatles or mj. Both jana and laurie will perform to minor songs of those shows.
On a side note, thank you for maintaining this civil forum for fans of this beloved and sometimes bewildering show. I've been a long time reader, but this is my first post.

Welcome, bailadora, to our little MB group. We are all pretty congenial (and opinionated) as a rule and I hope you jump right in and post often.

Last week's show seemed hurried to me too. And the dances appeared to suffer for it. I don't really know the reason as all couples had the usual amount of time to prepare. Tom was urging proceedings along due to the time constraint and perhaps that rushed feeling infected the dancers.

Hmmm... to me, those songs are widely recognizable so I'm wondering if you think they are minor because you were not yet born when they were first released...? That might make a difference.

But I totally agree about the set designs.

The show is less than 10 hours away and we still do not know two of the dance styles. Unusual. But apparently, both Jana/Gleb and Ryan/Cheryl will be performing their bits on other Cirque stages.

So we know Jana and Gleb will be at the Love theatre at the Mirage, do you know where Ryan and Cheryl will do their Waltz?
I was also wondering if they will bring in an audience to watch these 2 couples, because so many couples have said the audience have really gotten them more into it and it's exciting to hear the crowd.

I believe that Ryan and Cheryl are in Las Vegas. Their dance is going to somehow incorporate a pool of water.

I guess it is possible that an audience will be there. The regular Cirque audience? Sure, why not?

...as long as they can still hear the music, that is.

I didn't realize that at first, but being that there is no elimination this week why not take advantage of the official stages and costumes elsewhere than what they could create in the regular ballroom. I wonder what this will mean for the judges since they will not be able to physically see the performance. I guess it will be similar to the times when they have had to view and judge a tape from the dress rehearsal. Whether this gives Jana and Ryan an advantage remains to be seen. Maybe tonight will be similar to Disney Night where the judging won't be too rough.
