How is the 6 couple Dance Off for Immunity supposed to work for next week?
The Monday night show is only one hour, but the results show on Tuesday will still be two hours.
Will audience voting work the same way? Could the producers be using the Dance Off pairings
as a means to ensure that certain key couples remain, while lesser dancers (despite the popular vote)
are sent home sooner?
Does anyone have any details or thoughts as to who is dancing against whom,
or which dances will be assigned to the competing teams.

Look for a press release on Thursday afternoon or evening. And check TV Guide for Derek Hough's blog between then and Friday. The press releases usually cover the broad strokes, and Derek usually fills in the details for weird stuff like this.
In the meantime, your guess is as good as anyone else's.
All we know so far is that on the East coast, the show will begin at 8 and end at 9.

Pure had a bit on it today but they were confused as to how it will work too. They mentioned that Sharna knows their dance already but that's about it.

Just read an excerpt from Maks' Entertainment Weekly blog. He says next Mon. will only be an hour long so the format will be a face-off with everyone divided into 6 groups of 2 pairs. All will dance, be scored and the highest scoring couple will be safe from elimination.

This sounds arbitrary. Does anyone think this is a good idea?

I've never liked the immunity dance off bit. It seems a perfect opportunity for the producers to manipulate things the way they want them.
Of course Laurie and Val will face off against Marilu/Derek.
And yes it's arbitrary. Other seasons the couple's have chosen their opponents.

And it's too early in the season for this. I don't get why they just couldn't have danced over 2 nights.

FROM Derek's TV Guide Blog- (it came out early):
"I do love our music this week for our tango. It's awesome and I think it's going to be good.
Next week's show is going to be a little crazy. Monday is a one-hour show because of the debate, so we have to try to get all the dances in in a short amount of time. It's not exactly a dance-off, but everyone is paired off, so one person will dance and the other will go on stage and dance right after. Everyone will be scored and whoever scores highest in each pair will be immune from elimination. So, six people will be immune and six people will be up for elimination. It's all about match-ups this week -- someone who might be eliminated otherwise could be immune just because of the pairs.
We are paired opposite Laurie and Val -- the leaders! So we have our work cut out for us! I don't know how they paired everyone off. The producers just put it together. I think part of it is to have the youngest girl to go up against the eldest."
-----------------------
And I guess the tallest contestant against the shortest?

Re: How is the 6 couple Dance Off for Immunity supposed to work for next week?
So Marilu has to compete against a girl 48 years younger.
Her only shot at getting a higher score is from Derek's choreography and her own sexual maturity, given that it is a tango.
But if she gets that extra point? Folks will complain that the scores were fixed for Derek, that the setup was unfair to Val because he couldn't get "all sexual" with Laurie because of her age, etc. etc...
This show loves to stir the pot.

I actually like this idea. I'm probably going to be the only one, but that's okay. I like being able to see them side by side. Of course, they DO need to make sure that similar dancers are paired. Putting Rick against Laurie or Marilu or James would be an automatic win for anyone but Rick. Likewise, putting Laurie with Marilu or James (2 strong dancers) would be a treat to watch!

You aren't going to see them side-by-side. You will see them one after the other.

I had a premonition that this is exactly what the producers were going to do.
They aren't too subtle are they?

Re: How is the 6 couple Dance Off for Immunity supposed to work for next week?
Here is the official description. I have posted the pairings and the music in a Week 3 thread.
"Two couples will each be tasked with dancing the same dance style, but to different songs. After each couple dances, they will receive their scores from the judges, who will comment on the highs and lows of each dance for each Face Off. The couple with the highest score will find themselves immune from elimination, but the other couple will be in jeopardy. At the end of the night, the six low scoring couples will rely on the viewers’ votes to help save them, and one of those couples will be eliminated on Tuesday night’s results show."

So really, the viewers will only vote for the 6 low scoring couples???? Is that how it will work? But DWTS uses cumulative scores for different purposes throughout the season so this would deprive the immune couples of a large chunk of potential votes. This is too confusing for this humble (I heard that HAHA) fan.

Yes, we will only vote for those couples who have not received immunity, which will mean that many of the votes cast before the hour is up will be wasted.
As for the cumulative bit being used in the future, all the couples are going to get scores from the judges and that is all the cumulative points are ever based on -- not audience votes.
But we have to wonder if cumulative points from before will come into play if any of these couples get the same score from the judges as the couple whom they are competing against for immunity. First they will try to break the tie with Len's "head judge" vote, but if that one is the same, they might use cumulative points from before to break the tie. I think that would be unfair, but who knows....

I always get a chuckle out of using the word cumulative as it was so strictly forbidden on the old ABC board. Some of the restrictions on that board were simply ludicrous.
