Re: DWTS General Chit Chat
Love Kurt, he was of a time when quality of skating mattered as a whole. It wasn't just about quad, skate, skate, skate... quad, skate, skate, skate. I have no interest in current male and female skaters. They are boring, you can see the gears turning in their heads as they prepare for the next jump.Lesallee wrote:Just for fun: the incomparable Kurt Browning doing his interpretation of Gene Kelly's Singing in the Rain. I always hope Kurt would consider doing DWTS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXtd7xq7URM
I miss Kurt, Scott Hamilton, Michelle Kwan, Alexei Yagudin, etc.
Today it's just people with skates on their feet, on the ice while music plays, very few of them actually FEEL the music.
Unfortunately for us in the US, all the networks want to show are the men and women so I hardly ever get to see the pairs or ice dancers.
/rant, lol.

Totally agree with you, peebeeb. All the skaters you mentioned plus
my personal favorite, Brian Boitano brought elegance and artistry
to the sport. Now it's nothing but a jumping contest.

I agree ... and I find that this is spilling over into dance also.At times it is just a contest of tricks and it ruins the style of the dances.
I guess that is why I love to see a classic ballroom dance and not the contemporary so much.
Right now I am watching White Christmas ... Danny and Vera doing '' The Best Things " routine .... so great !!

Re: DWTS General Chit Chat
Here in Canada we have great depth in our ice dance pairs. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, Piper Gilles and Paul Poitier. We do get to see some wonderful routines as skating is covered well on TV. A lot of the "tricks" you see in ice dancing now were mandated by the skating federation to make ice dancing more difficult and competitive.
I have watched Kurt Browning skate for so many years. He trained here in Edmonton at the fabled Royal Glenora Club. As did Kristi Yamaguchi, that wonderful champion.
PB, you mentioned Alexei Yagudin. He seemed to always skate in Evgeni Plushenko's shadow but not in Canada where Alexei was a huge favourite. Alexei even thought about moving here and obtaining citizenship so he could skate for Canada.

Brian was awesome too, and so many more from that time and now all they care about is the quad which is why the one male skater I'll watch is our Jason Brown. His skating I enjoy and I don't care if he ever does the quad or not.Babs2147 wrote:Totally agree with you, peebeeb. All the skaters you mentioned plus

Alexei's footwork was stunning and I always liked him better than Evgeni. I really do miss those days of skating.Lesallee wrote:Here in Canada we have great depth in our ice dance pairs. A very Merry Christmas to all from a very chilly Edmonton, AB.
Note to sister kin: you get well and back with us on the board.
Brother, I love your Christmas pugs! Would you dress your own babies up like that?

Re: DWTS General Chit Chat
Do you remember this skater. Was the only Russian skater I ever rooted for in all my days of watching ice skating. (Something no longer do). Was so happy when he took bronze in '88

really good guy off the ice.

I better not try to, or they would probably turn into pit bulls. It took me years just to find functional clothing they accepted.Lesallee wrote:...

I do remember Victor sis but I haven't thought about him in ages. The Russian skating factory churned out amazing skaters on a regular basis. I would still rate Alexei Yagudin as my favourite.

Re: DWTS General Chit Chat
This place is oh so quiet lately... Hope no one is affected by the heavy snow and arctic temperatures my radio reported for the US and Canada. Be safe and warm everyone! My thoughts are with sister Kincaid- get well soon and let us know.
For me in Germany, 2017 will be history in six hours from now. Wishing all of you the best for next year.

Re: DWTS General Chit Chat
Wishing everyone a wonderful 2018. And anticipating a little warm up here in Alberta. Should start tomorrow. It has been frigid for sure. We sailed along for most of Dec. with very warm weather then bang, it's -27 C.
I am also worrying about our sister, kincaid and hoping things are improving for her.

Re: DWTS General Chit Chat
I hope that 2018 finds everyone healthy and happy.
I live in one of those frigid states, the temp last night was -18 and the wind chill was -36. The heater in here cannot keep up with it all and I am so damn cold.
Spring can't come soon enough.
Sending healing thoughts to kincaid. *hugs*
