Re: Week 5, Season 23, "Most Memorable Year"
So the tear-jerking theme night is back. Not everyone's favorite, but always a chance to find out more about the celebs. Wonder if they will still do the switch-up as well. Probably not, since it is Maks' show, he's back, and he doesn't like it.
Anyway, André Rieu is a pleasant surprise. This guy can put on a show. He brings the fun back to classical music.

I used to hate this cry me a river week but I see it a little differently now. We get some insight into the celeb's lives that we would likely never know otherwise. Gee, I am really mellowing!

Re: Week 5, Season 23, "Most Memorable Year"
The only stories hard to take are always the 'death of a family member' ones. With all necessary respect for the celebs, these packages are often produced in an overly dramatic way.
I for one prefer positive messages. The turning point in a carreer, a new chapter in life, reaching a goal, overcoming adversities, or surviving a disease. Sometimes even tough stories can be fascinating, like Tommy Chong being imprisoned or Noah Galloway struggling to get his life back after losing two limbs.

Yes, it does get kind of maudlin. It's kind of like there is a pall over the show. It's hard to be sexy and uplifting with these stories. It's like mixing oil and water. Have they ever done a jive or lively dance to one of these stories?

Oh yes. Charlie and Sharna's Jive to Happy by Pharell Williams is a perfect example.

I don't like most memorable year....seems like a way for producers of the show to milk it for ratings and for the celebs to get sympathy votes........
funny... the show like to mix it up....why not come up with another theme....
hmmmmm

Re: Week 5, Season 23, "Most Memorable Year"
Thank you psychee for your updates. When done well memorable year has provided beautiful and powerful performances. It also shows that dance is more than a series of steps properly executed...it can be a way to express our emotions and provide catharsis. Disabled contestants that have a hard time with the restrictions of traditional ballroom dancing have been able to shine on their memorable year performances.
The problem comes with the assignment of dance styles that are not conducive for expressing deep emotions to some of the couples. That day should be restricted to contemporary, paso doble, viennese waltz and maybe a happy dance that allows breaking hold (such as jive) for the younger dancers that want to convey a very joyous experience.
This week Amber may suffer with the samba. It is not a dramatic dancestyle and it is difficult technically. James was not given much help with the ballroom tango. He probably has the most compelling story of all: near fatal crash just a year ago and his successful comeback. Very difficult to portray this story with a tango. Looking forward to Sharna's answer to this challenge.

Re: Week 5, Season 23, "Most Memorable Year"
Nice post, bailadora. I will say though for me the problem is not the dance style itself. Michael Sam did a really touching Rumba; Antonio Brown performed an uplifting Foxtrot. Any style can work, but imo the couples should be given freedom to chose the style and music they consider appropriate for their message. Since MMY is done at an early stage, there is a great variety of previosly unlearned dances left.

They put in requests for this three weeks in advance and can choose their style of dance to go with their song. It only has to be "one unlearned dance".

Re: Week 5, Season 23, "Most Memorable Year"
Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't even aware they do it the way I want. So the Tango was Sharna's decision? Fine. A Jive or a Salsa wouldn't work given the story James will tell.

I take back any disparaging words I have spoken about Mandy Moore. That opening number was simply a dream, a sweet dream.

Still no mention of an elimination, did James get it wrong? (I hope).

I'm getting tired of Maureen's spacy and overly fragile behavior. She needs to pull it together. She acts too childish.

She did declare tonight that America will not see her cry again.
I don't think Tom is going to hold her to it, though, lol...

It wasn't James getting it wrong. The producers even had George Pennachio thinking that there would be an elimination, though I couldn't imagine how they would do that. Pennachio is the ABC guy who I get the running order from.
And last week, the producers had folks believing that two of the dances were going to be off site... but that didn't happen either. Maybe things get written earlier in the week and by the time they are communicated they are changed?

Re: Week 5, Season 23, "Most Memorable Year"
Strong performances on this episode. The one that's lagging badly is amber. She deserved 6's for that tentative and low energy samba. It's preposterous that she got the same scores as maureen, much less calvin. I guess the judges are still walking on eggshells around her. The closeness of everyone's scores could mean that there could be a surprise elimination next week. I think that calvin and marilu are getting a lot of votes so I split my votes between laurie, james, terra and jana. I also used a couple of online accounts. Remember that there's still time to vote online.
I was still wondering if the pros really had any say on the dance assignment this week. It would seem strange that a savvy pro such as maks would select samba for a most nemorable year dance, particularly with the limitations that amber has. Kristyn Burtt, who usually has good inside information, says that producers selected the dances. That would make sense and would reinforce my belief that they lost a golden opportunity to give a more appropriate dancing style to the most uplifting story: james'.
