Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Season 20 - Week 1

Post by LadyMustang65 Sun Mar 15, 2015 3:43 pm

Here is what I found for dances/music:

Michael and Peta – Cha Cha Cha (“Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson)

Redfoo and Emma – Cha Cha Cha (“Juicy Wiggle” by Redfoo)
Rumer and Val – Foxtrot (“Take Me To Church” by Hozier)

Charlotte and Keo – Jive (“Shake a Tail Feather” by The Blues Brothers)
Patti and Artem – Foxtrot (“Lady Marmalade” by Patti LaBelle)
Willow and Mark – Cha Cha Cha (“Lips Are Movin'” by Megan Trainor)
Chris and Witney – Jive (“Footloose” by Kenny Loggins)

Nastia and Derek – Foxtrot
Noah and Sharna – Cha Cha Cha (“I Lived” by One Republic)
Robert and Kym – Cha Cha Cha (“Bills” by Lunch Money Lewis)
Suzanne and Tony – Cha Cha Cha (“Physical” by Olivia Newton-John”)

Riker and Allison – Jive (“What I Like About You” by The Romantics)

As I look through this list, I only recognize 3 of the listed songs - Lady Marmalade, Footloose, and Physical.   Possibly What I Like About You, but I won't be sure until I actually hear the song.  I'm not sure why no song is listed for Nastia/Derek.

Predictions - All of our jive folks are in trouble, with the possible exception of Riker.  Since I'd read that he has some prior ballroom dance experience, he may be okay if that's one of the songs he did.  At least he's young and presumably fit and can handle it.  Charlotte is the model, and a couple of things I've read sound as if she may belong to the "deceptively unfit" category of that model who was with Alex Mazo.  From what you've all said about Chris, I can't see him doing well with the jive, especially since he's presumably had less time to work on it than the others.

I think all our foxtrot folks will be fine.  I love the foxtrot, but it seems less physically demanding and perhaps a bit easier to learn than the others.  No clue about the folks doing the cha cha cha, although I am looking forward to see Robert Herjavic try it.  Ditto for Suzanne Somers.

Anyway, a little over 24 hours!  Can't wait!!!  Smile

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by singlyme Tue Mar 17, 2015 7:56 am

Bear in mind, I don't know the steps.  My viewing is based on grace and performance.  That being said, it was quite an entertaining evening!  Strangers became pleasant surprises.  My critiques are short.

Willow & Mark - Nice.

Robert & Kym - Fun.  Surprising energy.  Romance in bloom?

Riker & Allison - Good, but his hands are "funny."

Charlotte & Keo - She came off like a blonde bimbo, and the dancing wasn't very good either.

Patti & Artem - Very graceful, and Lady Marmalade is one of my favorite songs.  She was still standing after the dance, but I was afraid the stairs would finish her off.

Chris & Witney - Some of it looked pretty good.  Some of it was awkward.  Made me think that sometimes "clod-kicking" pays off.

Michael & Peta - Pretty darned impressive, but for the frozen nervous smile.  lol.  Carrie noticed, too.

Nastia & Derek - Graceful, beautiful lines.  But the music arrangement sucked.

Redfoo & Emma - Meh.

Noah & Sharna - How do you judge?  Watching what someone has accomplished after catastrophic injury is inspiring, however.....

Suzanne & Tony - Because she's my age, I was hoping for a blowout performance.  Didn't really care for it.  But the way she bounced up those stairs was impressive.  I haven't been able to sprint like that in years.

Rumer & Val - Flowing, graceful, seamless.  Best performance of the night.

OT:  Did anyone catch the Premarin commercial?  Using this cream can cause dementia?  Does this mean that sex won't hurt and your partner can get as much as he wants because you won't remember doing it?  Some of these ads are bizzare.

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by Guest Tue Mar 17, 2015 12:01 pm

I didn't see much of the show; was going back and forth with "The Voice."  I thought most of it was about what you'd expect on the first night.  Chris was better than I ever would have expected given the whirlwind of his life recently.  Maybe he will surprise us.  Seems a lot less stiff than Sean Lowe was.

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by LadyMustang65 Tue Mar 17, 2015 5:35 pm

I agree with much of what you wrote, Singly.  Charlotte did come off like a blonde bimbo, but I'm guessing that was not necessarily what she would have wanted.  I did like her attitude, though, and I was impressed that she messed up so badly yet still kept going, still kept smiling, and still had a great attitude when it was over.  (See Lolo Jones for how not to do it right.)  For that reason alone, I'd love to see her get at least another week or two.  Jive is I think the most difficult to have to do the first week.

I was annoyed with Nastia/Derek.  Probably, to be honest, mostly Derek.  I agree she was graceful and had some beautiful lines, but overall I felt like the dance was all about Derek.  Derek is headlining a show in New York, so let's do New York, New York.  Derek dances with the Rockettes, so let's throw that in too.  And really, Derek, a lift in a foxtrot?  Really?  Not to mention the first week?  I'm a bit worried that this will be a repeat of his season with Shawn Johnson where the rules didn't apply to him, and it was all about pleasing the audience (as if it's impossible to please an audience without breaking the rules) as an excuse to just do whatever the heck he wanted.  I really wish he had just stuck to his guns and taken the season off.

The other thing that struck me as kind of inappropriate was the juxtaposition of Willow and Charlotte.  I am assuming they brought in Willow as an appeal to a younger audience.  So going on that assumption, in what universe was it then appropriate to have Charlotte's intro be the fake naked with the melons?  I know it was a play on that Super Bowl commercial, but this is not the Super Bowl and that commercial only played in part of the country, so the rest of the people have no idea what it was all about anyway.  It just seemed wildly wrong to try to attract a younger audience only to go all sleazy with Charlotte.  Maybe that's just me turning into a crotchety old lady.

Chris did better than I thought he would, but still just okay for me.  I don't know whether Robert really danced well or not because I was having too much fun watching him have so much fun to really notice.  For entertainment value, though, it was a joy.  I wanted someone to take a pair of scissors to Riker's hair.  And perhaps stick some duct tape over the mouth of whoever told him that mess looked good.  Michael Sam is a doll.  Rumer really was the best of the night but I've heard she tends to be rather intense, so I hope she doesn't go the Lea Thompson route.  We've already heard Val telling her to relax; I hope he stays on top of that.  Redfoo was not as annoying as I expected him to be.

Overall, a very enjoyable night for me.

RECAP FOR MARCH 16, 2015

Hello, and welcome to season TWENTY of Dancing With The Stars! This is the tenth anniversary of the show and I am proud to say I’ve watched every single season and been obsessed since day one. With a brand new epic cast, amazing pros and our judges and hosts back and better than ever, we are in for quite a ride.

As always we open with a high energy group number that has everyone on their feet. Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews introduce our cast and WOW! I am even more excited now than I was when they announced the cast a few weeks ago.

Contestant: Willow Shields

Claim To Fame: Hunger Games star

Pro: Mark Ballas

Dance: Cha Cha

Sammi: The Hunger Games parody was adorable. For a fourteen year old she is mature and wise beyond her years.

As for the dance, it is very age appropriate and cute. She looks like she is having a ball and is so sweet.  However, seeing Tony and Rumer look so genuinely happy for her makes me enjoy it even more.

Len: It was a feel good dance that was a good start from the show.

Julianne: She offers some places to improve, but she did a good job.

Bruno: He gushes over how good it was.

Carrie Ann: Age appropriate but sophisticated.

Scores: 6-6-6-7=25 out of 40

Aww, Patti LaBelle gave her hugs and kisses!! So cute!!

Contestant: Robert Herjavec

Claim To Fame: Shark Tank star

Pro: Kym Johnson

Dance: Cha Cha

Sammi: Welcome back, Kym! They seem like they are having so much fun already. He seems to be having trouble holding her, which shows he has a gentleman side to him. I respect that.

Okay, I will sell my soul to the highest bidder if I can have her legs. No matter how much working out I do, they never look that good. I love the money theme and background dancers and it is definitely entertaining. However, the look of pure joy on his face makes this all worthwhile.

Julianne: She was blown away and she loves his energy.

Bruno: He thinks it was fun.

Carrie Ann: Crispy and clean and the moves were great.

Len: He also enjoyed it.

Scores: 7-7-7-7=28 out of 40

I think he is very happy? I love him so much!

Contestant: Riker Lynch

Claim To Fame: Musican/Disney star

Pro: Allison Holker

Dance: Jive

Sammi: I love the rock and roll theme. The gymnastics they added was fun and a nice twist. They seem to be enjoying themselves, yet taking it seriously. Yes, he can refine himself a bit, but where is the fun in that? Also, I love her outfit!

Bruno: He is screaming  and jumping on the table over how much he liked it.

Carrie Ann: Explosive and exciting.

Len: Full on, flat out energy.

Julianne: She is excited about this partnership. It is the perfect combination of technicality and modern dance.

Scores: 8-7-8-8=31 out of 40

Contestant: Charlotte McKinney

Claim To Fame: Model/Carl’s Jr. star

Pro: Keo Motsepe

Dance: Jive

Sammi: The taping of her boobs reminded me of that scene on Now and Then when Roberta did it. She missed the beginning, but her attitude was so positive and she tried so hard that I can’t help but root for her. You be you, girlfriend!

Carrie Ann: She missed the beginning, but she is fun to watch.

Len: He offers her advice, but enjoyed it.

Julianne: She knows this dance was hard, but she did well.

Bruno: She covered the mistakes and carried on.

Scores: 6-5-5-6=22 out of 40.

Contestant: Patti LaBelle

Claim To Fame: Grammy Winning Legend

Pro: Artem Chigvintsev

Dance: Foxtrot

Sammi: I love her dress and how classy they are together. This whole routine showcases who she is: classy, a diva and a fun person. She is going to be one to watch out for, that’s for sure! Elegant and beautiful.

Len: It had a lovely, naturalness to it. Well done.

Julianne:  She is a gorgeous, graceful goddess.

Bruno: She was elegant and composed and he thanks her for being here.

Carrie Ann: She is incredible.

Scores: 7-6-6-6=25 out of 40

Contestant:  Chris Soules

Claim To Fame: The Bachelor

Pro: Witney Carson

Dance: Jive

Sammi: They are actually quite adorable. I like the tractor theme and how it kind of fits for the movie Footloose. I would have preferred them to dance to Farmer In The Dell, but maybe next week.

Julianne: He needs to work on the feet, but they are fun to watch.

Bruno: Rough, rugged and utterly charming.

Carrie Ann: He has tons of potential and charisma.

Len: He needs polish but he has potential.

Scores: 7-6-6-7=26 out of 40

Contestant: Michael Sam

Claim To Fame: NFL player/Free Agent Player

Pro: Peta Murgatroyd

Dance: Cha cha

Sammi: They seem to be having a BLAST out there! It is a pleasure to watch from start to finish and I smiled the whole way through.

Bruno: Funky and had good partner work.

Julianne: Watch the feet, but his groove is infectious.

Len: Terrific, but he needs to work on his feet.

Carrie Ann: He is gorgeous, but he needs toward on his booty and stop oversmilng.

Scores: 6-6-7-7=26 out of 40

Contestant: Nastia Liukin

Claim To Fame: Olympic gymnast

Pro: Derek Hough

Dance: Foxtrot

Sammi: It is classy, elegant with just the right amount of youthful energy. The Rockette kicks at the end are just  perfect. LOVE!!

Carrie Ann: Fantastic, but there was a lift.

Len: Sweet and delicious, well done.

Julianne: Explosive and amazing, but bring it back in a bit.

Bruno: work on not overextending, but well done.

Scores: 7-7-8-8=30 out of 40

Contestant: Redfoo

Claim To Fame: LMFAO member

Pro: Emma Slater

Dance: Cha cha

Sammi: He is the light of the ballroom, no question. Between his energy, determination and the costumes, they are the most unforgettable couple of the night so far. It is a party on the dance floor with these two!

Len: He is wild, needs hip action, but was fun.

Julianne: She is excited to see more from him.

Bruno: He needs to work on his feet and technique, but he’s got time.

Carrie Ann: He has the hook, but needs the whole package.

Scores: 6-5-5-6=22 out of 40

Contestant: Noah Galloway

Claim To Fame: Army veteran, personal trainer and motivational speaker

Pro: Sharna Burgess

Dance: Cha cha

Sammi: I am crying already watching him. Thank you for your service, first of all. You are a true inspiration. I can’t even say anything except way to go, both of you. WOW. It was simple, elegant and amazing.

Julianne: This is the first time she saw the connection needed in the competition. She hopes everyone knows the creativity Sharna added was beautiful, as was everything.

Bruno: The connection was wonderful and he has a unique presence.

Carrie Ann: thank you for challenging himself and  her as a judge She is in tears as she tries to tell him how inspiring he is.

Len: It was a major triumph. He salutes him.

Scores: 7-6-6-7=26 out of 40

Contestant: Suzanne Somers

Claim To Fame: Three’s Company/Step By Step star

Pro: Tony Dovalani

Dance: Cha cha

Sammi: Tony in a leotard with the thigh master…Tony, you be you!  A thigh master class into a cha cha….WOW. We can call this the most creative dance of the night. I loved it from start to finish.

Bruno: Very well executed.

Carrie Ann: This made her love Tony more and she wants to be Suzanne.

Len: She is in great condition.

Julianne: She wants more raunch from her.

Scores: 6-6-6-7=25 out of 40

Contestant: Rumer Willis

Claim To Fame: TV star/singer

Sammi: She looks just like her mama Demi Moore. I am in awe watching them. This is the best dance of the night and the best way to end the first episode of the season. Aww, her daddy was in tears.

Carrie Ann: Passionate, intense and she is in it too win it!

Len: This could be Val’s season.

Julianne: She had chills watching them. They are the ones to watch.

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by SLA44 Tue Mar 17, 2015 9:18 pm

I enjoyed the season opener.  I thought Chris did a pretty decent job with his first dance ~ he moves much more fluently than Sean did IMO.

I thought the best dance of the night was Rumer and Val without a doubt and I hope that they keep it up!  I would love to see them beat Derek!  Smile

I did have tears in my eyes when Noah finished his dance and they showed how excited his son was for him,  He has got to be an inspiration to other wounded vets and I would like to see him stay around for a while.

Robert the Shark was fun to watch and he seemed to be really enjoying himself.

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by singlyme Wed Mar 18, 2015 5:55 am

I, too, was annoyed with the time spent on sleaze, mustang.  TPTB seem to want to appeal to every segment of society.  This season, we got old; we got young; we got disabled; we got rocker; we got the comedian; we got the athletes; and we got the bimbo.  What wish is left to fill?  The scenario they produced for Charlotte made it appear she was more suited to soft porn than DWTS.

Honestly, I didn't notice anything with Derek's number other than the lousy arrangement of the music.  Didn't know he was doing the NY thing himself.  I just don't keep up with the news, I guess.  I stopped resenting him when I realized just how brilliant a dancer he is.  And there's a lot of love/hate with him on the boards.  Don't they love controversy?  Between the Bach franchise and this show, one comes to understand just how producer-driven these shows are.  I'm constantly suspicious of what goes on behind the curtain.  (Shades of paranoia - lol)

Lord, that Sammit T. recap gets in the way!  I keep having to scroll past it to see your post.

I'm with you on Riker's hair.  It's not just long.  It's stringy and looks like bleached straw.  It would be nice to actually see his face.  I wonder if Allison will pull him down with her need to shine, or if she learned her lesson last season.  This number was actually pretty good.

As for Rumer, you may well be right about her similarity to Lea.  Hope it doesn't prove to be the case.

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by rkc1960 Wed Mar 18, 2015 3:30 pm

I finally watched it last night, or should I say the majority of it. I tuned out a few parts but I'll comment on what I saw.

Rumor and Val...I think they were the best. Nastia and Derek were good as well, but it seemed a bit overpowering to me. A gymnast is going to have some of those moves and extensions come easy to them so in comparison I thought Rumor was better also in that she had to learn so much more in the first week and become so much more graceful. I don't know, I would just like to see Derek get beat this season and let Val finally have a win. I think Rumor just may be the one to beat. Hopefully Derek will piss the judges off enough this season to make a difference in that. It was funny to see Bruce Willis and Demi Moore in the audience. Yeah, you usually see celebrities in the audience but usually never biggies like that. Odd how they sat so far apart that the camera had to pan a ways to get from one to the other. lol. Are they not civil to each other?

Willow and Mark...nice job. It's just odd to see an adult man dance with a 14 year old. At least the 17 yr. olds they've had on the show don't seem as jail bait as 14. Wondering how they will do with the more intimate dances? Just weird.

Redfoo and Emma...wasn't impressed.

Suzanne Sommers and Tony...for as old as she is she still looks like she's in good shape. Obviously Tony took in slower with her. It was ok but I liked Patti Labelle's dance better.

Patti Labelle...She was pretty graceful for someone her age.

Riker and Allison...He danced okay. It was a bit frantic but it was appropriate for the dance and music. I'm wondering how he will do the other dances. I'm just hoping this won't be another case of someone staying in way longer than they should because they have a oodles of teeny bopper fans that will vote like crazy because they think he's cute. smh.

Charlotte and Keo...I was not liking that promo of her and the naked boob jokes. Thought it was a bit sleazy. The over-abundance of boob jokes was becoming as annoying as listening to Ashley I. talk incessantly about being a virgin. ugh. As to her dancing, she made a number of mistakes. We'll see how she pulls it out in the coming weeks.

Robert and Kym...Hmmmm, it seems a bit obvious already that the two are becoming an item. Millionaire, 50's but handsome, get's out of a private plane and jumps into a Ferrari, just weeks out of a 25 yr. marriage...yep, I bet she had stars in her eyes! She's nearing 40 and still wants kids....I think she just hit the jackpot! As to the dancing, he surprised me. He wasn't bad. The startling part was how much fun he was having. On Shark Tank he looks as stern and grumpy as the rest of the millionaires.

Chris and Witney...He definitely doesn't look like he'll be as bad as Sean. We'll see how he does in the coming weeks. I wonder how close the other Whitney keeps herself to the dancing duo's practices? There were reports with Sean and Catherine that Catherine wasn't too thrilled with Peta during Sean's time on DWTS. Can't remember what Chris' statement was he made but it sounded like he was saying he would have to keep in mind that he was a taken man now. Ehhh...I guess it was a joke.

Noah and Sharna...wow...I was tearing up along with everyone else. I hope he's able to stick around for a while. I would rather see him be there to inspire us than to have someone like Riker remain there due to young girls drooling over him. Remember how long the Nascar driver and Tommy Chung was there and they couldn't dance a lick.

Michael and Peta I didn't see so I can't comment.

I would say there is a world of difference between Peta and Whitney and that Chris's Whitney would not have the concerns that Catherine might have had.  JMO

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by LadyMustang65 Wed Mar 18, 2015 6:04 pm

Yeah, singly, that's why Derek was not going to do the show this season.  He's doing the
Rockette's New York Spring Spectacular show - singing, dancing, and he apparently choreographed a lot of it.  So the story goes,  he "jokingly" told the producers that his show was dark on Mondays, so they found him a partner based in New York (Nastia is not the original partner, although I have not heard who that was, but was signed when the original partner couldn't do it because she lives in New York) so they could rehearse in New York during the week and then fly out for the Monday show.  So the whole New York theme with the Rockette-style kicks at the end just made me think the whole number was a vanity thing for Derek.  Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it struck me the same way as the Singing in the Rain dance last season - all about/for Derek rather than his partner.

I don't deny the Derek is a brilliant dancer, but I do feel as though he's been phoning it in the last few seasons. So much of his choreography feels the same to me these days, and I am beyond tired of the whole "military-precision" stuff.  He's done it with the last 2 or 3 team dances, and he did it with Bethany's free-style as well.  Like he's figured out what works and doesn't really put his heart and soul into it any more unless it's something that he really wants to do - like the Singing in the Rain Gene Kelly recreation.  I truly think he would benefit from a season or two off to regroup and recharge.

Season 20 - Week 1 Empty Re: Season 20 - Week 1

Post by singlyme Thu Mar 19, 2015 8:49 am

I hear you, mustang.  I've been mostly put off the past couple of seasons with all the "hand-dancing."  But I no longer have an aversion to Derek.  That feeling is reserved for Mark and his over-the-top choreo.  I'm curious to see if he'll overdance his partner as he usually does.  Don't care to see any more of his ridiculous costuming.  The judges rave over some of it - like the Mario Brothers number - but I find this shtick distracting.

rkc, I agree about Charlotte and the "sleaze" factor.  I don't know if this is producer-driven for controversy or if this is really what she's like.  I do hope they ease off of it.  Now that opening night is done, we might see if she has any talent.  Women aren't going to vote for a blonde bimbo.

Post by rkc1960 Thu Mar 19, 2015 9:08 am

SLA, I don't know if there is a world of difference between Peta and Witney when it comes to being flirty with certain partners. Last season Witney had Alfonso and he was older and married so you didn't see that, This season when they showed her response to meeting Chris, like she was a giddy school girl. Even the teeny bit we saw of their practices she was touching him in a flirtatious manner and when their dance ended in the back of the truck she had her arm in his crotch. That may have been an accident but just saying. Yeah, she is saying she likes Whitney and all...blah, blah, blah but you just never know. You hear too many times on this show of romantic interest with the dancing partners. Just saying.

Singly, I didn't watch the Super Bowl so I had no idea who Charlotte was. I guess since she is known for that commercial I'm sure they were playing it up so others would associate her with that as well. They didn't have to do it in the way they did. Just a bit too over the top. They have to remember that it airs in an early time slot and kids DO watch it even if it's because their Moms are watching it and it's the only thing on the tv. And I agree that women don't have a tendency to vote for someone that presents themselves like someone that would flirt with and try to steal your man right out from under your nose.
