Great Pro Numbers from Season 23
This is my new favorite! (The uploader captioned it wrong, though. It wasn't an Opening Dance.)

Also known as "The Derek Special". Sorry, Psychee, I couldn't resist.

Re: Great Pro Numbers from Season 23
No complaints here. Mandy Moore did try to give Val a front position and Maks a cameo bit, but with that neon yellow outfit, Derek definitely stands out!
It does seem to be a song that fits with his personality ... the whole theme of "The more you move, the better you will feel" of the song is very much like his mantra of "Motion is Emotion".
The more I watch it, the more things I notice... such as the fact that he did a backwards somersault between Emma and Hayley, and not a forward one. Wow.
But my favorite part is actually the girls sitting with the hand jive bit!

Re: Great Pro Numbers from Season 23
as much as I like the Pro dances I seem to find so much is going on that I can't possibly catch it all...sometimes I can't even tell who is who! ....but I will watch it again and look for the "extras"

So far this is my favorite too! I love how bright and colorful it was, and it looked like the dancers were having fun. The hand jive part was neat, I'm not sure they have done it before on the show.

Re: Great Pro Numbers from Season 23
There is apparently a story behind this. The story is that it was originally a bit of a strip tease dance, and some of the pros objected to it as "cheap". This was the second time in two weeks that some pros were refusing to be involved in one of Mandy Moore's overly sexual creations -- the first was last week when Cheryl refused to dance to the female bump and grind dance they did last week. In any case, the choreography of this one wound up being changed, but it is not known who initiated the change - Mandy herself? The producers? The pros? We may never know...

I am not a Mandy Moore fan by any means. She seems to have one mind set for everything she choreographs. And it is getting progressively worse. I wish more of the pros (especially the women) would stand up to be counted as Cheryl did.

When exactly did Mandy Moore become the universal weapon, and why? In former times, the pros used to choreograph a lot of these group numbers/ openings/ bumpers themselves.

I remember when a lot of pro dances were choreographed by Maksim, Louie, and a lot by Lacey.

...and by Tony, Mark, Derek, Sharna, Emma, Cheryl, Peta, and so on. This show is probably the biggest brainpool of seasoned choreographers ever. I don't get it.

Re: Great Pro Numbers from Season 23
Mandy has no training in ballroom dancing. Her training is in Contemporary. But what she brings to DWTS is the ability to orchestrate large swaths of movement like a conductor.
She comes into a session with an outline of how she wants dancers to enter, move through and around each other and exit. The dancers themselves, and a couple that she especially keeps close, suggest the actual dancing movements. She might say, "Here, you can do that twirly thing you do", and they translate that into something they recognize. When that is all set, she then drills them until they do the the moves together.
So, I don't think it is too surprising that she is not delivering sophisticated choreography. That isn't her thing.
HER thing is the kind of opening dance that the show began with, the sweeping camera from on high, swooping down low over the observatory, and then dancers appearing from the sides and creating star patterns and eventually the doors opening onto the ballroom. That is her gift. And it is a good one.
It just isn't an every day kind of thing, and she is hired now to choreograph one number a week for the show, so there is likely to be some not-so-good-ones in the mix.
But that colorful hand clapping one is a real good example of what she is good at indoors. That camera movement, the multiple entries and exits in front of the camera... the sweeping through the cast so that everyone has a moment in the frame... that's Mandy Moore.
The bumpers, on the other hand, are all choreographed by the pros.

Oh yes! That was so beautiful. I wonder when they will create such a production again.

Wanted to say I thought the Halloween Opening Number should be on the list too. It's always fun when the stars get to participate, and even Tom got to be in on it too!
Psychee, if you happen to find a better video clip of this one, feel free to post it.

This and the opening number from week 1 are my favorites as well. Enjoyed Andre Rieu and company; would have loved an encore.Psychee22 wrote:This one definitely makes the list!

This was truly lovely to see. There is something about a beautifully performed traditional routine that really shows the power of dance. The look, the music, the control of the movements, everything just works together so wonderfully.

Sue, that Halloween video is HD. You can't get better than that! You can make it full page by clicking on the brackets thing on the bottom right corner of the video frame. [ ]
