Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Well, when has DWTS ever worried about assigning the wrong music to any particular dance? They like to make the pros earn their keep by figuring out how to do a VW to a piece of music that is clearly a ChaCha or something.

Lol, I think that was one of the most memorably odd dance and song pairings ever. Props to Emma for being so creative with it.DeadManDancing wrote:...or a Tango to Cheeseburgers In Paradise, for example.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
The costumes of Team Past look great. Even though this team has a couple of dancers that have forgotten parts of their previous routines (Ryan & Maureen) they could prevail over Team Future. They have a slow dance with nice music and three fabulous female pros that know how to choreograph for their partners' skill level. This experience may also be positive for Maureen. Artem seems to be having difficulty to come up with a teaching style that aids Maureen development. Lindsay, Sharna & Cheryl have a proven record for successfully teaching non-dancersand Maureen should learn a lot from them. Even if she is eliminated tomorrow, she would go out in a positive note.
It seems that the future envisioned by Team Future is a gray dystopic totalitarian nightmare (not very helpful escapism for this election cycle). In contrast to Team Past, two of TF's members have been on tours this last week, limiting group rehearsal time to 2 days. A good performance will hinge in how well they incorporate Terra to the dance. Dystopian futuristic dances (particularly those involving Derek) have generally had a paso feel to them and Terra had a hard time with her paso. Hopefully Sasha is able to successfully adapt this dance for Terra.

Team dances are at the end--right? If that is the case, James won't get much of a break between dances, which may or may not be a good thing. He needs to stay hydrated.

I am a great fan of Outlander and Team Past took that piece of music and made it their own. Wonderful!

I absolutely loved Team Past's dance. It was beautifully elegant from the costumes to the dance.
I missed Team Future's score though.

SCORES: (CAI, Len, JH, Bruno) Teams: Past = 38, Future = 35.
James / Sharna 9+9+9+9 = 36 + 38 = 74
Calvin / Lindsay 9+9+9+9 = 36 + 38 = 74

Terra / Sasha 9+8+9+8 = 34 + 35 = 69
Jana / Gleb 8+8+9+9= 34 + 35 = 69
Ryan / Cheryl 7+7+7+7= 28 + 38 = 66
Maureen / Artem 7+7+7+7= 28 + 38 = 66 (eliminated)
Marilu / Derek 7+7+8+7 = 29 + 35 = 64

Even though there's a 10 point difference between first and last place, the percentage difference is only 2.06%. That looks pretty precarious to me.

Beautiful pic of Team Past!

Unfortunately this pic had cut off Calvin on the far right. There should be other photos that include him.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
My prediction about the team dances turned out right. The wonderful pros of Team Past came up with a coherent and beautiful choreography. The slow music allowed the weaker dancers to perform well.
Team Future was not as bad as I expected: the vision was not horribly dystopian, Terra was successfully integrated, and synchronization was not bad. Nevertheless, the choreography lacked the cohesion of Team Past, the set and costume designs were too monochromatic and the ending was weird (pass around a plant and pledge allegiance?). Marilu's fall was probably a bigger deal for the live studio audience than the TV one due to camera angle, and that may account for the 8.

Artem cracked me up in his 80's costume. He's dressed as a rocker but he is still Artem.

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
Couldn't get on here all day, maintenance they said.
Anyway, I thought Eras night was good. Top individual dance (for me) was James' and Sharna's Jitterbug. James is dancing like a pro now, he easily holds his own when dancing with the troupe. Len carped that he wanted more jitterbug content so I watched several jitterbug competitions today and hey, what they did WAS jitterbug. All those moves are legit in professionally performed jitterbug.
Calvin and Lindsay were my second faves. Really, I liked them all but James and Calvin stood out to me.
Gleb is getting beaten up on sm for his remarks to Len, unfairly so, I think. Does no one remember the head butting that went on between Maks and Len? Or Derek and Len, Mark and Len? Val's had a few differences with him too and Tony clashed with all the judges frequently. Len can be quite rude and sometimes a little challenge is good for him

Re: Week 7, Season 23, "Eras Night"
At least the old grump nailed it with his comment about Team Past, and Derek lost another team dance...
Honestly, I totally agreed it was brave (and high time) to come out and just do a proper dance. That was a visual treat.

Oh, Deadie... Derek is a good guy with a heart of gold... he works very hard for the things he gets.... why do you ---and others -- get joy from watching him fail?
Besides, your schadenfreude is rather misplaced here. This was Val's production, not Derek's. Marilu was the last person picked for the team and Derek's choreography ideas were discarded mid-week. Ultimately, he was only a dancer in this routine.
So, should we laugh at the fact that Val lost another team dance? Or doesn't that have the same humor value?
