Re: Strictly Come Dancing 2016

I think that last week's results show wasn't handled well enough.  Remember that on DWTS Season 17, there were times when voting was glitchy.  Since the voting was inaccurate, no one was eliminated.  That's how it should have been handled here.  There should be 4 couples in the finale, as usual.

One of the things I hope they'll do for Claudia and AJ is let them perform their Showdance anyway.  After all, they were in the Top 4.  If it doesn't happen this season, I hope it happens soon (like maybe a guest performance).

To be fair, there have been two, three and four finalists in the show's past before, so it's not like a three person finale is unheard of (in fact, prior to series ten, there had never been four finalists).

Equally, there is precedent for all semi-finalists to make it through to the final - in series six, due to a combination of a contestant's withdrawal (leaving three semi-finalists instead of the intended four), and a tie on the leader-board, it was mathematically impossible for one of the semi-finalists not to be in the dance-off no matter how many public votes they received. In this case they put all three through and the votes were carried over into the final, but this was... controversial. It did lead to a change in the way that ties work on the leader-board though.

In this case though, online votes for all contestants would have been affected equally, and people could still vote by telephone with no problems. Louise had the same points deficit to make up as Claudia did (as they were tied bottom), and managed to make it through. I'm not sure it merits special consideration, but I can see why others may disagree.

Personally, I thought Claudia was probably the weakest overall contestant remaining, although I did think her quickstep on the night was very good (her rumba, conversely, I thought was pretty bad). I can't really feel too upset about her having left at this juncture because of that, though based on the night's dancing I think an Ore vs. Louise bottom two (with either leaving) would have been preferable - I thought both dances from both Ore and Louise were weak.

Claudia will dance in the final alongside her fellow eliminated contestants. I very much doubt she'll do her showdance (and, considering the BBC knows they've had one fewer contestant since Will's withdrawal in week three, they may not even have scheduled time to fit an extra dance into the show's run time). The only time I can think of anything similar happening in a final was when Jade withdrew from series seven through injury (essentially ending her career as well) and she danced the tango she would have performed.

As an aside I'm struck with how many times I've had to mention withdrawals here - by my count there's only been five celebrities (and, I guess, two professionals) withdraw in fourteen series and 192 couples, but they seem to have a effect on the show when they do!

Oti retweeted Sharna's inspirational message. I think a loud scream was heard in Germany.

Smart strategies from Oti & Joanne on their song selections for the showdances: a passionate song for Danny to counteract the "perfect but robotic" criticism, and a classic & elegant ballroom song for Ore to show his growth & personality. Kevin's choice seems pretty vanilla (will probably be performed as a waltzy contemporary) & it highlights Louise's flat performances. Nevertheless it seems that the British audience loves vanilla as Louise is the only one that has escaped a dance-off even when she was at the bottom of the scoreboard like last week, and, therefore, has a great probability of winning. Let's see if the boys can pull off an upset.

Actually, consensus around the specific group fans I talk with most is that Set Fire to The Rain is the worst of the three showdance songs, that One Moment in Time is pretty bad and that I Got Rhythm is probably the best. It probably balances out though, given (imo) that Oti is the strongest of the remaining choreographers, and Joanne the weakest. Kevin's showdances normally go down fairly well even when they're not particularly impactful, too, so I guess that round could go to any of them!

My feeling, though, is that the showdances aren't as important as the show makes out - recent years' offerings haven't been very good and don't really seem to have impacted upon who won (last year, Jay's was very weak, but there was no stopping that juggernaut). I think the reprisals we know about - Danny's samba, Ore's jive, Louise's AT; all high-scorers - will show a better competition. If they follow the format of the last few series, these will be the last dances they do, too.

Who will win is a tricky question. Louise not having been bottom two doesn't necessarily help - Kevin's had two finalists before reach the final who didn't hit the bottom two in Susanna and Frankie, both of whom lost to people who had been in the dance-off (Abbey and Caroline, respectively). I'd have thought it was between Danny and Louise, except we know from last week's results Danny can't have been higher than third in the public vote. Hard to call, I'd say.

...
High five

These two on the same show- that would probably blow my mind...

Now seriously, what could I add to what you and LeaLianna have already said about the finalists and their chances? Reading my coffee grounds, I basically agree that the showdances on Stricltly do not have as much influence on the end-result as the freestyles on DWTS. That may change however if someone pulls off an exceptional concept- and isn't that most likely expectable from Oti? Given the song choices, the roads the Cliftons will take seem much more predictable. While the Broadway entertainer style sits well on Ore though (remember his Singin' In The Rain performance), I doubt that Louise is able to fill a Contemporary-based routine (what else could you dance to that
slomo track) with personality. Hence she may end as the dying swan.
Danny and Oti are probably also taking the highest, hopefully rewarded risk with redoing the Samba- the only way from a perfect score is down. Ore's Jive and Louise's AT have been scored a nearly perfect 39 each, but seem easier to reproduce in comparison.
For the redemption round, I have a feeling Danny will get the Foxtrot because that really didn't go well the first time. This pick would also maintain the balance of Latin and Ballroom. Ore might have to do the Tango again, and Louise may be facing another Jive or ChaCha- something fast however to contrast the AT; her Ballroom dances do not really require much improvement.
Not sure if the personalities of the pros matter as much as on DWTS, where they are stars in their own right, but I could imagine Oti gained a lot of sympathy for the fresh air she brought to this season.
For Joanne, it's also only the second appearance, but she hasn't delivered on the same level imo. Kevin, on the other hand, may not be the most popular pro from what I seem to remember. Frankie Bridge was good enough to keep up with Caroline Flack; so did Pasha maybe make the difference?
Who will win? No idea. Whom do I want to win? The couple who deserves it based on technical ability, chemistry, choreography level, and enertainment value (am I talking about James and Sharna again?) Maybe I will at least see it happen on Strictly, and then, as far as I am concerned, let there be Christmas.

DMD - I'd say the pros' personalities are still a big factor over here. The Cliftons are controversial because of perceived favouritism (Kevin, in particular, getting four contenders - and finalists - in a row), but they've got a big fanbase too. Because of the weekday companion show It Takes Two, the pros are on prime-time television often at least once a day in some capacity (interviews, training footage, the Pro Challenge etc.) for the length of their stay on the main programme and then less frequently for the rest of the run. Some of them have had their own presenting gigs, regularly appear on other UK reality programmes - most recently Gleb was on Celebrity Masterchef - and I'd say that at the very least Anton has a fair amount of name-recognition-value outside of fans of the programme. A fair number of the pros (and past ones) also successfully run their own UK tours - some of them ending in a West End run - and Joanne's about to take the lead role in a tour of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. It's not quite Derek Hough levels, but they do build up some quite big followings, and that has to have some impact on the couples' chances.

Re: Frankie vs. Caroline, I mainly just think Caroline was a bit more interesting to watch, though I will admit to liking Pasha more than I do Kevin, so you might have a point! My winner that year, though, would have been Pixie.

This year, my order of preference is Danny, then Louise, then Ore - and in fact there are a few contestants I'd have rather seen in the final than Ore!

Whoops - actually more recently than Gleb on Masterchef, Ola Jordan competed in I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! this year.

Lots of interesting input on our (formerly) quiet little thread! That's wonderful, makes it fun.

All I can add is my personal wish for Danny and Oti to win. And that's because I enjoyed them the most. Pretty simple.

Oti to DWTS? Hmm, I have some apprehension about that. I love this talented and amazing young woman but where would DWTS slot her? They are notorious for placing their female pros (mainly) in a particular niche where it becomes difficult to break out of. Think of Emma.  She has never had a real true contender. DWTS keeps its emphasis on the male pros, for the most part and I wouldn't like to watch Oti being neglected in favour of Val or Gleb.

There is a German version of this show too. But in many people's opinion doing it means you've reached the bottom...

Now since you mentioned other potential finalists, I would put Laura Whitmore and Daisy Lowe on that list. Both left way too early, and we
probably have to blame Ed Balls here. Judge Rinder would have filled the role of the male underdog at least as good as Ore. Out of the middle of the pack, he was my personal favorite from week one. Ore peaked in week five already, while Judge Rinder kept improving slow and steady, week after week. Other than Ore he was never in the bottom two before week ten, so it seems he also got the votes up until that point. Reaching week eleven is pretty impressive considering where he started.

So far it's only speculations anyway, but I think no professional would miss the chance to do DWTS when it's offered, and no doubt Oti knows what to expect there. She wouldn't be starting from scratch like Keo, and she could always return to the UK or Germany. We all know how much tailwind some male pros have been getting from the producers, but that only goes to show how good our Lovely Ladies really are- especially Peta, Sharna, and Lindsay. Jenna will also make her way. As much as I love Emma, she isn't quite on the same level. She blew her chance with Redfoo because she couldn't reign him in. There is a reason why Bill Engvall was a better match for her. And if we're totally honest, TPTB have slots for male pros as well. What's up with Tony, Artem, and Tristan? Aren't Gleb as the resident hunk and Val as the designated crown prince caught in a trap too?
Yes, the ladies always have to work harder (sadly, not only true for DWTS), but they never complain and just do it.
Meanwhile the dances are done, and Ore is in the lead while Danny and Louise are tied for second three points behind. No comment before I've seen it.

Louise's popularity had her defeat Danny Mac but was not enough to overcome the 3 point deficit with Ore. So the final mirrored the semis . I'm sad for Oti & Danny but at least content that Ore won over Louise.

How do you know Louise defeated Danny when second and third place aren't specified?
After watching the dances, I have to admit Ore delivered and is a dignified champion. Louise somehow stagnated, and Danny messed up the QS big time (which might have cost him the win, because the showdance was killer compared to the others and the Samba was as good as the first time).
However, isn't it ironic? On DWTS, I complained that the underdog lost to the predictable winner. Now Strictly proves it is possible to come up from behind and outdo the frontrunners, and I'm still not happy...
Not as simple as that, I know. I am pissed because in both cases my favorite pros were affected, and it should be about the celebrities; so probably something's wrong with me.

Kevin Clifton reminds me of Tony Dovolani: a brilliant ballroom dancer & teacher that lacks the additional spark of creativity to take him over the top. That showdance was a run of the mill contemporary.

Ore was aided by his consistency today (even though poor camera work did not allow us to see if there was proper synchronization in some segments of his dances). I preferred his American Smooth to his showdance. I even preferred Claudia's quickstep to Ore's showdance. But it was not bad.

Hopefully Danny Mac will get more acting offers after this run & Oti will get more chances to share her creativity with larger audiences (spring season in the US & fall back in Strictly?).

Well not bad for the Cliftons placing 1,2 this year in spite of all the cries of nepotism. She guided Ore perfectly to his win. He wasn't my horse in this race.I think the public voting for Ore was the Brits love of the underdog since he was the only one of the three couples with no dance experience and the judges gave all high scores so they played no part of swaying the outcome. It's hard for me to admit it but Ore was pretty darn good.I don't think I've ever seen anyone doing the jive who good do so many kick flicks and not get winded. Sad

Congrats to Ore and Joanne.

I really thought, and hoped Danny and Oti would win but not to be. But I won anyway just by seeing all these great performances.

With the exception of Nyle and Peta on DWTS my favourites haven't won the big one for a while on either show. Oh well, hope springs eternal so just wait for next year. My pick will literally waltz right into the winner's circle!

I just watched the full episode and was suddenly reminded that the scores don't count in the finale. So Ore was purely the viewers' choice, but still the scores and comments from the judges might have given him an edge. Also, their pick for the redemption round was a bit odd, because the American Smooth had been one of Ore's strongest performances from the early weeks and, out of all Ballroom Dances, would least reveal his posture problems. It is what it is, he was darn good last night as bluechipdude rightfully said, and Oti's star is just beginning to rise.
@bailadora: Let's Dance Germany is also coming up in spring, colliding with DWTS. I'd hate to lose her on our show, but if she really gets invited and decides to pack her bag and hop on a plane, I truly wish her the best of luck. We'll see when our pros are announced.

You'd still have Motsi in Germany DMD and the Mabuse family would be known in more markets, opening more opportunities for them.

I know, and Motsi is an incredible Latin dancer too, but most of the time she's behind the judges table. All I get from her is one show number per season. Sad
Honestly, Oti on DWTS would just be one more reason to keep watching (besides Sharna, my main crush). It's not that she would disappear, right?

The network is RTL, in case you want to check that upfront. The premiere isn't scheduled yet, but is expected for late March or early April. But let me warn you: the first few weeks, the show stretches over about four hours with all the commercial breaks. Maybe better just watch the videos; usually up the next day. Should Oti return, they owe her a true contender this time.
