100 M - The Fastest Man Alive
There's been some really cool technical analysis on the running techniques of Usain Bolt - the Gold Medal winner in the 200 & 100 for the last two Olympics.
The guy is really long / tall and it gives him an advantage when you compare "stride length": Bolt only requires 41-steps to cross finish line, while the next fastest requires about 44-45 steps; a huge difference:
"....In the final heat on 100m in World Championship in Berlin Bolt made 41 steps with an average length of 2.44m. His closest competitor Tyson Gay (height 5'11'') made 45.45 steps with the average length of 2.20. But the influence of the height on the step length would be too simple an explanation for his superiority.

With Bolt being 6'5" he has a 6" height advantage over Gay so step difference makes sense. I would think the taller swimmers would have a similar advantage over swimmers with a shorter height as well.

Yes, exactly SLAw; I'm not sure, but I think Gay is short 5'10'' and that would be huge unless Gay is more explosive.SLA44 wrote:With Bolt being 6'5" he has a 6" height advantage over Gay so step difference makes sense. Michael Johnson provides a really cool 2-minute analysis of Bolt's stride length - notice how Bolt is still in mid-air, while Gatlin already has complete his step:
