Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Just wanted to say how proud and happy Canada is with our swimming sensation, Penny Oleksiak. Gold, silver, two bronze with another race today. And she's just 16.
Plus, Rosie McLellan successfully defended her 2012 Olympic Gold in trampoline today.

Yes your Penny tied with our Simone Emanual for the gold and I was happy to see them hugging each other in the pool. They both showed what true sportsmanship is all about IMO.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Well I don't know what Gabby's story is but I was sure disappointed in her. She was the only one out the final five that did not put her hand over her heart when the national anthem was played for the team Gold. And then she sat on the bench when Simone and Ali were doing the all around looking like a sour puss and when the other two stood up to give Simone and Ali a standing ovation for doing so well she just stayed sitting there on her butt. I am so disappointed in her.GymGirlJane wrote:Gabby fired Kittia. (Gabby has a long history of firing her coaches or otherwise having a fallout with them. After her post 2012 time off it was Chow who fired gabby -- not the other way around. ) There was apparently some kind of falling out. But the thing about how she needed Christian to spot her is baloney. Kittia is not even in San Jose with them (in spite of what the announcers said)singlyme wrote:SLA44 wrote:Gee what has happened to Gabby Douglas? She was such a dynamo last Olympics.
I wondered the same thing. They mentioned that her preferred coach had to sit in the stands because only one was allowed on the floor with her and she needed someone who could spot her. She didn't look happy throughout the course of events and we didn't see the smile and confidence she's previously displayed.
Gabby has been falling apart as of late. What you saw in trials is a continuation of what we saw at nationals. Marta has not been happy with her for a variety of reasons and the scoop is Gabby has not been training since nationals.
Lots of speculation as to what the story is. But the bottom line is the team does not need her in Rio. The only place she brings any real value is on Bars and there are simply better ways to structure the team -- even for bars. She has zero potential at this point (even before the more recent melt downs) for any Event medals. Many folks are hoping she does not make the team

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Congrats to Phelps and Ledecky. Swimmers in a class by themselves. I did, however, feel kind of sad for the other gold and silver winners. For them, their achievements were overshadowed by all the Phelps hype and coverage.
And... Congrats to Team USA. Though I agree with above posts, wondering why Gabby was even there. She seemed to perk up after her bar routine but, other than that, it appeared she didn't care to be there. I would have preferred to see what Laurie Hernandez might have done.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Lesalle, I finally downloaded the NBC streaming and can pick and choose the events I want to see. I really got into the Rugby 7s men and women games. The women really surprised me with their intensity and not afraid to mix it up with good tackling and going head first into the scrums. I'm glad that the swimming and gymnastics are pretty much over as they were getting rather tiresome. That golf course they built for these games has turned out to be awesome and is playing very fair and as of today the gold looks like it's between Stenson and Rose and there's a big crowd out there for the final round.I missed most of the canoe/kayak and rowing events as they happened as I spent a lot of time watching the Equestrian
events as there were some many great horses and talented riders.Anyway for the next two days we can watch history with golf and probable world records in track,

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
The Equestrian events are quite awesome with those gorgeous animals. We have been to Spruce Meadows in Calgary several times for events and always enjoy it.
The Canadian Rowing Team had a less than stellar Olympics. As the Rowing program receives the lion's share of government funding I think there will be some questions now. Perhaps some of that money could be better used elsewhere.
Brianne Theisen-Eaton won Bronze in Heptathlon, the first Canadian medal in that discipline ever. It was expected to be gold but she had an erratic day 1. Her husband is Ashton Eaton, American decathlon star. He took a lot of heat on social media for wearing a Team Canada hat in support of his wife. He basically told the haters to take a hike and wore the hat to the end. Brianne will return the gesture during Ashton's event.

You may remember horses are my passion. Some of our athletes so far failed under pressure and didn't fulfill the expectations, some surprised us, but our riders just delivered again; like they did many times before. I'll take a moment to celebrate the military and dressage teams.Lesallee wrote:The Equestrian events are quite awesome with those gorgeous animals. Best of luck to our showjumping team. Qualifying today looked very promising. Also looking forward to the dressage individual round with the freestyles tomorrow!

Hooray for the German Equestrian Team! Our team isn't doing too badly.
Come Tuesday, Bro, I will be pulling hard for Germany to lose to our gritty soccer playing ladies!

I felt so for that poor French rider that lost her seating when her horse stumbled. I was glad she didn't get hurt.

Now that didn't work- Canada beaten by our soccer ladies and the equestrian team. Just promise we're still family.Lesallee wrote:Hooray for the German Equestrian Team! Our team isn't doing too badly.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
That jump-off round for bronze between Canada and Germany was pretty exciting and showed just how much parity there is around the equine world. The usuall gold medal country, Germany had to settle for a bronze while France and the US got gold and silver. In the 2012 Olympics I think GB placed at the top of the heap. All in all Canada did well and has a couple of younger very good riders and horses for the next Olympics. I missed parts of some of the events Lesalle, did the old timer Ian Miller ride in this one?

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
No, Captain Canada, Ian Miller was forced to pass on these Olympics as his top horse was ailing leaving him, as it was put, without a teammate capable of winning.bluechipdude wrote:That jump-off round for bronze between Canada and Germany was pretty exciting and showed just how much parity there is around the equine world. The usuall gold medal country, Germany had to settle for a bronze while France and the US got gold and silver. I'm having a lot of fun with the Andre DeGrasse/Usain Bolt bromance. They finished last nights 200 metre semi final almost neck and neck and just beaming at each other.

The analyst for track earlier today said that he thinks that deGrasse is going to give Mr. Bolt some bigtime pressure he hasn't seen before. So it could be an upset or a new world record or both.

Usain Bolt, speaking of Andre DeGrasse, has said he believes the future is assured with Andre.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Thanks for the 'usual gold medal country' dude, but one should never take anything for granted. Zero points in the qualifying, zero in the first round, and then the nerves kicked in. It took the oldest team member (Ludger Beerbaum, who just announced his retirement at age 52) to keep them in the game. He will leave some big shoes to fill.bluechipdude wrote:That jump-off round for bronze between Canada and Germany was pretty exciting and showed just how much parity there is around the equine world. The usuall gold medal country, Germany had to settle for a bronze while France and the US got gold and silver. Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Well it looks like the Olympics are over boo hoo, and time to reflect on the past two weeks. I think it would be an understatement to say these ones belong to the US.Yes we dominated the usuall track and field events but won or placed well in events like the shotput, Mr.Rupp winning a bronze in the Marathon and in boxing, wrestling ,men and womens.Allison Felix winning 6 golds in track, almost unheard of.FHM your analysis of Bolt only needing 41 steps to run the 100m versus 45 for others who are shorter I think can be used for swimming as well.It wasn't that many years ago when the average female gymnast was 5'3.Now most are under 5'0 and some 4'8, so physics is playing a big role in determining the best size an athlete should be for a given competition.

Ryan Lochte is beginning to experience the repercussions of his actions in Rio. Speedo has withdrawn sponsorship of the man(?) and you wonder if more will follow suit.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Glad it's over, just doesn't hold the same sort of interest for me as it used to. Ready for my tv schedule to get back to normal. Haven't even seen the noon news for two weeks. (or any of my primetime NBC shows either). NBC owns about 5 channels they show events on but they still can't find a channel that I can watch online without signing in with my cable or dish username and password. HAY, FU NBC, I DON'T HAVE CABLE OR DISH.... WHAT USERNAME AND PW DO I USE IF I WATCH YOUR NETWORK USING AN ANTENNA?

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
Yes they have - I think it is up to 5 now - it's costing him millions of dollars. Ralph Lauren was another that cancelled his contract and I can't remember who the other three are but I think that Speedo alone was like a $16 million dollar contract he lost and he'll never re-coop all that his actions have cost him this time. I hope he learns he is not that important as he seemed to think he was and uses his brain in the future before he pulls a stupid stunt like he did in Rio.Lesallee wrote:Ryan Lochte is beginning to experience the repercussions of his actions in Rio. Re: 2016 Summer Olympics
According to a person in the know who has known Lochte since he was 15 says that normally he's always been a level headed young man and a team player, until this happened. This has happened before with someone else years ago and they were suspended for 18 months. If he receives the same punishment this would only give him about two years to prepare for the Tokyo and he would be 36 years old.His contract with Speedo was for 10 years and is expiring now and I presume the others are the same. He obviously made a dumb decision by sticking with that phony story until it was too late and even now he's still not coming clean. Hanging on to that old saw "The devil made me do it," Booze.
