Re: Between Seasons Conversations
The Golden Globe Awards were on tonight. Congratulations to Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone for winning Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for La La Land (it also won Best Picture - Musical or Comedy). Very attractive color palette in this photo. Ryan has blue eyes and Emma has green eyes but their eye colors here looks so similar because they are in a darkened theater.
Ryan had to face Colin Farrell (The Lobster), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Jonah Hill (War Dogs), and fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool). Emma won against Annette Bening (20th Century Woman), Lily Collins (Rules Don't Apply), Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen), and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins).
The media had been playing up the musical/comedy actor category as a Ryan vs. Ryan competition but generally thought that Gosling would ultimately win. La La Land has the momentum right now, and it will be interesting to see how well it will do come Oscar time since the Oscars don't have a separate musical/comedy category.

I've been experimenting with making cold brew coffee at home. It creates a less acidic brew to drink. I would then heat it up when the weather calls for it and add some milk. Whipped cream also optional!
My other experiment this winter is playing around with instant hot cocoa mix by adding ground spices to it like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and a pinch of black pepper. I like how this combo spices up the cocoa and makes it an even warmer drink.
Too bad store-bought egg nog is almost gone from the stores now.

They don't have eggnog during the holidays where you are? Love hot cocoa.

Re: Between Seasons Conversations
The grocery stores do carry egg nog during the holidays. It's just that egg nog is such a seasonal drink, so it's at that point now that the companies that make it will have stopped for the year and the grocery stores are selling what stock is left. Then we have to wait until winter comes again. At the moment I'm not that ambitious about making it from scratch.

I would think eggnog would be more popular, but I guess not. I like it and it's like a milkshake.

Re: Between Seasons Conversations
Several years ago we attended a holiday party where the host owned a dairy farm. He produced a homemade eggnog out of whole cream that was so out of this world that I will never forget it. Store bought eggnog is pretty anemic next to that.

Hot Cocoa from scratch not from overly sugared envelopes. Still remember my mom making it that way. Was so good to the smell factory as well. She served it to us with overly buttered hot toast when we came home from school on a cold snowy day. Can still smell both toast and cocoa on a cold winter day.

Re: Between Seasons Conversations
True high levels of cocoa in envelopes or bulk is very hard to find. Most store bought is milk chocolate with lots of sugar. I get around it by buying packets that are low in sugar and might have a smidgen of dark chocolate. I boost the cocoa percentage to a higher level by buying Lindtt bars 85-90% cocoa. There are other brands you can buy but they don't have a 85% or higher. Break up one of the packet squares into littlemoo2meow wrote:Hot Cocoa from scratch not from overly sugared envelopes. chunks into your cup with the envelope cocoa and add hot water. It's just like real cocoa should taste and much healthier for you.

I'm like you, sis. Coffee will do all year round. Just when the weather is really nasty, I spice it up with whisky or kirsch and put some whipped cream on top.Babs2147 wrote:I'm a coffee lover and drink more of it in the winter.
Glühwein is also helpful when it's cold outside. But it should be home made; not the bottled swill from the supermarket. The better the wine, the less headache.

Re: Between Seasons Conversations
Yes I remember those coffee swilling days over 3 decades ago. Buy the coffee beans and keep in the fridge and take out and grind as you need. Not just any old coffee mind you,we were very Tony and the coffee had to be Jamaican Blue. At that time it fetched $30/lb. I checked out at Amazon and it now costs $55-75 a pound, so it has kept pace with inflation. As you get older your system can't handle 6-8 cups a day because you get insomnia so pretty soon you're down to 2 cups/day and only drink it during the hours of 8am-3pm. Any old type of coffee will do.I remember a proff. telling us in a class that as we get older we will switch from beer to hard liquor, he was so right.DeadManDancing wrote:I'm like you, sis. Oh yum, I haven't made that in a long time but it beats anything you can buy.moo2meow wrote:Hot Cocoa from scratch not from overly sugared envelopes. Still remember my mom making it that way. It's cold enough here in the Midwest so maybe I need to have some soon.

So do I, sis. No summer without sun screen; no winter without chicken soup! Miss Sophie would add a little sherry though.
