The Battles

Post by singlyme on Tue Apr 16, 2013 7:21 am

Wow. So much talent on that stage last night. Unbelievably difficult to throw one away. I'm glad some were stolen. I'm happy to say the coaches chose the ones I preferred. Except for Blake's last pick with the brothers. I wanted to hear the other guy again. Oh, well.

I'm especially rooting for Jess (? - the girl who sang with the redhead). I really didn't like the redhead's voice. I think Adam called her voice "thinner." To me, it was "tinny." And I was happy the Michael Jackson ex-singer (Sasha?) got picked up. That duet was phenomenal.

Singly Adam kept the Michael Jackson ex-singer and I actually thought the other one was better and am glad that Shakira picked her up! Right now both of the gals first names are escaping me but I remember their last names are Hill (ex-Michael Jackson singer) and Inglacias (SP?) for the one with the short dark hair that Shakira saved.

Wow, what a show! I've never watched a whole season of The Voice before (just repeats of the audition shows) so the battles are really interesting. There are some really wonderful singers being coached, and I'll be fascinated to see how this all shakes out.

I was disappointed last night in one of the rejections. They didn't even show the battle - only that the guy I liked went home.

They didn't have time to show all the battles last night because it was only a one hour show instead of two hours like Monday nights was. They may have the battles on their website though but I have not checked so don't know for sure.

I'm guessing the battles they didn't show had more obvious differences than the ones the did show.

You're probably right, WW. I'm lately finding that for some reason, I've really been drawn to the bluesy sound some of the singers have. I think Patrick somebody is another one I'm watching for.

I'm watching for those brothers from Idaho, and I don't even remember which coach got them.

I agree with you, SLA. That was the best battle of the night. I also thought the music teacher with the short hair did better with that song but I knew for some reason that the other girl would get picked. I'm glad Shakira snatched her up because that would be a crime if she had to go home just because Adam put them in a duet together. Great matchup for a great duet but not so great a matchup if you really do want to keep both.

Sad to see Patrick Dunn go. I kept trying to place the long-haired, blonde guy in the duo he competed against. It finally hit me. He reminds me of Martin Mull.

But I got to keep Ryan (???) - the last battle. So far, my stand-outs are Ryan and Jess for the kind of voices I find unusual and would like to hear more of.

I watched part of this last night, while alternating with DWTS. Some really good singers are coming out of this, and the judges had some tough choices to make. The judges work hard with the singers and it must be hard to choose.

I taped DWTS and watched The Voice. They're mostly keeping the singers I favor, but I lost Ryan last night. Also Mary Miranda - the Latina singer, on the Monday show.

The two black women are phenomenal singers, so - as usual, I choose someone to champion that everyone else isn't falling all over. I pick Jess this time. We'll see how it goes. Seems that once your favorite is eliminated, it's not so much fun to watch.

I agree newto the judges do seem to work hard with the singers and there are some really good singers coming out of this. It seemed some of the choices were very hard for the judges to make and it would be hard especially if both did a really good job. It will be interesting to see what happens next week when it goes to live voting.

I was puzzled by some of the pairings for the knock-out rounds. When you have two powerhouse singers, either of whom could win the whole show, it seemed like pairing them was putting all your eggs in one basket.

It's occurred to me that the coaches are looking to have four "types" as their finalists for the live show. Does it seem so to you?

You could be right about that singly, it is a given that this season Blake will have a country singer but I'm not sure what "types" exactly the other three are going for. I agree that some very good singers are gone but when they get down to this part of the show they are really down to their best singers so I guess they have to pair good ones against each other.

Wow. So many terrific singers. It's going to be a difficult season and will require losing a lot of great talent. There are only a couple from last night that I wasn't crazy about. Both from Usher's team, I believe. Seemed that even he questioned his song choices after the performances. The Whitney Houston and Phil Collins songs.

Sarah Simpson reminds me of Cass Elliott from the Mamas and the Papas, but much prettier. And that drapey jacket the stylist put her in only exaggerated that feeling - the hefty flower child. I really like her sound.

I'm waiting to see Jess tonight to see if she's STILL my fav after hearing the remainder of the pared-down talent.

Just read that CeeLo and Christina are coming back next season . Shakira wants to spend more time with her new baby and Usher is doing a movie. I am so sad about this I love the panel of judges they have now can not stand the other two.

I agree, Whit. This was a much more viewer-friendly foursome.

I'm not into country music so I f-fwded through most of it. But I'm glad Sarah Simmons made it through. I never thought Garret was that big a deal for Shakira. She just seemed to like him, personality-wise.

I like Sasha Allen better than Judith Hill. We'll see where they go.

I caught snippets of the show last night while the commercials were running on DWTS. From what I saw, incredible talent. It is good to know our young people are pursuing their talents and not just putting them on the back burner. Sarah Simmons blew my mind.

I've lost the avid interest I had in the beginning. Too many singers who sing songs of genres I don't appreciate (mainly country). I ended up f-fwding through 90% of the show. Just caught Sarah and Michelle at the end - and I didn't care for the song he chose for Michelle. 15-minute show for me. lol.

Again, f-fwded through most of the show. Just don't care for country music. *sigh* All I have left are Sarah Simmons and Michelle Shamuel. I have a feeling Blake's little teenage Danielle is going to take the prize. She IS a fantastic talent, despite my apathy for the genre.

I think I'm glutted on the talent shows I once loved. Just TOO many of them. I don't feel forced to endure what I don't enjoy, and that little button on the remote is a release. It allows me to be more selective. And in being so, I've been using that button A LOT!

Just watched the elimination show from this week. I knew something went down because of all the hype of what Adam Levine said. Regardless of what happened that was not cool of him to say that. I'm hoping because people are going to be pissed at him that they don't take it out on his last remaining contestant.

I have to say that I was surprised at Lauren Hill's elimination. Not so surprised at the other girls (can't remember her name). I didn't like her song choice this week and when she was doing the duet with Danielle it was pretty clear that in comparison that her voice wasn't as good and was even waivering.

I do like Danielle and the Swon Brothers but I agree with you, Singly that the show is on Country overload. I too also think that Danielle will take it this season. I guess people have to take the good with the bad. This is what happens when voting is opened up to the viewing audience. There is alot more Country music fans out there than has been out there in the past. It seems like since they modernized Country music that the fans came running. Alot of people didn't like the classic Country singers.

Rkc I agree with you about Adam and I liked him until he made that remark. I'm sure he was upset about his two gals getting voted off especially the Hill girl but that doesn't excuse the remark. I voted for the one of his remaining and I worry that his remark is going to hurt her on the votes next week. I think that Hill portrayed such a diva that it turned people off, I know it did me and I did not vote for her plus she had already had a professional career signing with Michael Jackson while none of the others have had that experience.

I am one that didn't use to like country music but have come to like in the last year so yes there are a lot of country music fans out there and it is clear that they are voting however I do think that all of the country singers left are very good including the one Adam has left.

Adam has explained himself and why he said that he was upset that two of the best singers on that show were let go. People say things that they regret later on but if you read more about what Adam said then you wll understand that he was upset due to the fact that the country voted off his singers. He has explained enough and most people are understanding of why he said that. Plus I never once saw Judith act like a diva she was one of the nicest singers that + made good friends with everyone on their. If MJ picked her to sing with him she must have a great voice which we saw that she did. What excuse is their for Blake acting like he is drunk all the time ? I am sure everyone has said something that they regretted when they are angry and upset. JMO

Kerfuffle Politics: The Statement Adam Levine Shouldn't Need To Make

by Linda Holmes
May 29, 2013 2:13 PM

Tuesday night on The Voice, Adam Levine — who's the lead
singer of Maroon 5 when he's not judging reality television — had two of
the singers on his team eliminated. To understand this, just know that
each of the four judge-coaches (Levine, Shakira, Usher and Blake
Shelton) starts out with a team of singers they're mentoring, and as
they go through the competition, the coaches get pretty attached to the
folks on their team and try to help them win. If one of your singers
wins, you're sort of the "winning" coach for that season.

At the end, there were three singers left — Sarah Simmons and
Judith Hill, both from Levine's team, and Holly Tucker, from Blake
Shelton's team. Two of the three would get the boot. Tucker was the one
"saved" by audience voting, meaning Levine's two singers were
eliminated. Hill, in particular, has to have been a particularly tough
blow — she's very talented and was widely seen as a strong contender for
the victory.

But as he waited for the final results, with two of his good
singers imperiled, Levine muttered, "I hate this country." And because
apparently we don't have enough other things to worry about, this became
a kerfuffle.

It's perfectly, totally, painfully obvious that Adam Levine was
saying one of two things: (1) He was making a lighthearted statement
that he was mad at the voters for potentially getting rid of his
singers. Sort of, "Darn you, America." (2) He was making a slightly more
serious statement that America, as a voting population, often shows
terrible taste in singers. And, perhaps, though we're now getting into a
bit of light mind-reading, also has a way of unexpectedly shortchanging
women of color (like Hill) (Elton John famously said the same thing about American Idol
years ago when Jennifer Hudson, a person of some talent of whom you may
have heard, finished seventh behind several people you've never heard
of unless you are a die-hard Idol person).
